Final verse: [10th] 10.thoNdeer! PaaduminO* surumbaar pozhil mangaiyarkOn* oNdaar vElkaliyan oli maalaigaL* thoNdeer paaduminO* Oh Bhaagawathaas! Sing this ten-the garland of words composed by Kaliyan, having lovely garland and spear, the chief of Thirumangai. Bhagawathas! Sing this ten. (I remember my grandmother singing this ten every morning when I was studying in secondary school.- great ten- rhyming, simple ten with sweet tune. Kaliyan Kaliyanthaan.) The birds and the objects of nature adopted by the AzhwArs as messengers represent the spiritual preceptors [acharyas] who act as mediators in between God and the individual. They serve not only as teachers of spiritual knowledge but also as guides to the disciples to enable them to follow the prescribed path for mOksham and plead them on their behalf to secure the divine grace. They are therefore known as mediators. The birds with two feathers symbolically represent the acharyas possessing jnAna and anushtAnam – the two important qualifications to become an acharya. Some of the characteristics of birds symbolize the qualities of an acharya. For example, the white colour of the bird signifies the purity of thought of Acharyan. The melodious voice of a cuckoo symbolizes the sweet speech of an acharya. The pet [vaLarppu] bird like parrot [in the fifth verse- our today’s verse] implies modesty of the preceptor. The clouds showering rains represent the enormous generosity of Guru. Similarly the cool breeze indicates the calm temperament of the Acharyan. [All these are described very beautifully by Swamy Desikan in Dramidopanishad Taatparya RathnAvaLi 5th verse] Thirumangai AzhwAr ThiruvaDigalE SaraNam Regards Namo Narayana dAsan
