Srichoornam - yellow or red

I see iyengars having yellow Srichoornam. I was given to understand

earlier that red was the one to wear , as it represented Sri meaning

goddess Lakshmi.

 

Even noted scholars & vedic pundits have this distinct yellow

Srisoornam & white thiruman Kaappu.

 

would some one explain the justification / necessity of this

difference. Who are the people eligible to wear the yellow Srisoornam?
