AdiyEn Dhaasan.

For the benefit of the uninitiated, I hereby request you to explain the

significance of " kuththuvilakku " yEtrudhal in Perumal sannadhi, in our houses.

As the Mudhal aazhwaargal say,

" Vaiyyam thagaLiyaa, vaar kadalE neiyyaaga... "

" AnbE thagaLiyaa, AarvamE neiyyaaga... "

...... " Gnaanach chudar vilakkEtrinaan naan... "

VilakkEtrudhal is of primary importance in our daily worship.Though, adiyEn

religiously do the " ViLakkEtrudhal " daily, some doubts as to its maintenance

remain.

AdiyEn have had the rare anubhavam of doing the kainkaryam of cleaning the

thoongaavilakku in PeriyaperumaaL sannadhi in Srirangam kOvil,-( we call it

" thatti vazhiththal " in Srirangam kOvil.)for months together.,

But while cleaning the lamp we use in our houses, elders say so many different

things. My mother used to clean it on fridays invariably, before doing the

" archanai " for " Thaayaar " .

The lamp is very reverently cleaned, as if its a " vigragham " .with manjalkaappu

etc.,But a friend of mine from Srivillipuththoor say that their tradition is

never to clean the vilakku on fridays.

The doubts are:

1.Is proper cleaning of the lamp with " seeyakkaaipodi/ puli/ " etc., Ok ?Can we

clean the lamp like this on Fridays?,too?

2.Are there any specific rules as to how a lamp is to be cleaned?

3.Some say the lamp should not be " wiped " . is it so?

4.Thiri idum murai enna? Should the vat go clockwise around the head of the lamp

or anticlockwise?

5.Is there any particular " manthram " - (Thiruvaaraadhana kramam ?) for lighting

the lamp?

Please reply at leisure.

In the 'Thiruvaaradhana Kramam' they said nothing about lighting the lamp or any

procedure to clean it. 'Deepam' is one of the 'shodasa upachram' (16 upacharam),

for any devatha. Some ancesstors found and told it is better lighting a lamp

with gee than oil. That is all.

There is no specific sastram found (as per my knoledge)for your questions.

If anything specified in sastram or sampradayam, it should be maintained

strictly by everybody, but if there is no specification found (or also in the

case of yet to know wheather there is any specification or not) we can do as per

our own assumption.

Many of the questions raised by people shows their 'Achanniyam'.

God will guide us in necessary places if have maha viswasam on him.

Todays example:-

Two days back I found my UPS had gone repair within the warrenty period. I

called the supplyer and asked him to rectify it immediately. I requested him, 'I

have newly purchased the computer with high configuration, so, it is not

advicible to run it with out an UPS, so, you provide a standby UPS immediately.

He agreed and taken the repair UPS. Nex day he did not come. We made several

phones, and he is telling silly reasons everytime. Today afternoon he himself

called and postphoned the time of delivery to tomorrow. I got angry, but I am in

confusion, what action to be taken at this time?

What will happen?

Can I warn him as " I will give you saapam on the name of God it will work on

you, and you will be in trouble " ? I asked my 'Aaradhana Perumal' after evening

sandhi, 'Perumale you should wheather allow me to warn him as above, or you

should take action to make him handover the thing at the earliest. What to do?

Warn or leave? Perumal replied; " Leave it " .

I just forget about this thing, and thought he will lookafter it.

You may not believe it. Without any telephone or any other communication, today

itself, just 90 minutes back, he (UPS fellow) came and delivered the rectified

UPS and simply leaving without asking a single pye for even conveyance??!!!!!

The percentage of confidence what we have on him, will get that much percentage

of success.

Best regards,
