Guest guest
Respected Vasu Vadhyar: Namaskarams. I have some doubts on Gayatri Mantras of various deities. What is the origin of these Gayatri Mantras? Are they from some authentic works or by customs? I have come across different Gayatri Mantras for the same deity. For example, Sudarasana Gayatri, Ganesha Gayatri, etc… have different patterns of saying. Why are such differences occurring? What is the origin of the normal Gayatri Mantra itself? Who first initialized it? For example we know that Vishnu Sahasranamam is a part of Mahabharath and are in the form of dialogues between Bhishma, Krishna, Arjun, etc… Was there any such dialogue during which the powerful Gayatri Mantra was coined or advised? Thanks in advance for your advice on the above. Guest guest
Dear Sri Vaasu swAmin, I don't know the answers to all your questions but what I knew I thought I would share. The gaayatri mantras of different deities are all set in the gaayatri " chhandas " or poetic metre, hence their common name. Many such mantras are found in the MahaanaaraayaNa upaniShad (which I think is from Taittiriya AraNyaka of KriShNa yajur veda), such as Rudra Gayatri, Durga Gayatri, Garuda Gayatri, NarayaNa Gayatri. Some of the other gaayatris are found in upaniShads for that particular deity, for example one version of Ganesha gayatri is found in the Ganapati Atharvashira upaniShad from AtharvaNa veda. This version is different from the one in mahaanaaraayaNa upaniShad, here it starts " ekadantaaya vidmahe " whereas in M.N Up it starts " tat puruShaaya vidmahe " . I have also heard that some of these gaayatris also appear in different versions in puraaNas too, but do not know much about the contents of puraaNas. All I know about the so called 'original' gaayatri mantra (addressed to savitah devata) is that it was first heard by Rishi Vishvaamitra. I remember there was a story as to how he came to have the revelation of the gaayatri mantra but can't remember the story. I hope the learned members can shed further light on this and correct any mistakes in the above. sarvAparAdhAn kShamasva namO nArAyaNAya with praNAmams, Ranjan
