Dear Vasu Vadhyar, Namaskaram!

My father attained acharyan thiruvadigal last month and I was in India

to perform apara kriyas led by my eldest brother until the 13th day

(subha sweekaram). I am now back in the US and have several questions

regarding proper practice and observance of rituals. Swamin's answers

will be most valuable to me and hopefully to also others. I get

conflicting answers from our relatives and vadhyar and am therefore

confused.

(1) Are tharpanams to be performed during the first year?

(2) What should I do when the maasiyams/oonams are performed by my

eldest brother at home in Chennai (where our mother resides)?

(3) What are the required rituals duing the Mahalaya paksham?

(4) for (2) and (3) what is expected of my wife?

Question of Bharanyasam:

5)I beleive we are swayamacharyas (my parents' acharyan is their uncle

who performed samAshnam for them long time ago in Thiruchanoor) and we

belong to the Parakaala MaTam. Unfortunately, my father had not

performed Bharanyasam. I am told it is still possible to have the

Bharanyaasam done for him. My father was the oldest surviving member

of the family (as far as we know) and therefore it will probably not

be possible to continue the swayamacharya tradition. Therefore, is

there a way we can have the Bharanyaasam done by the Parakaala Matham?

(which, I assume, would otherwise be done with/through his achrayan?

is this understanding correct?)

Answers from all knowledgable people will be of great help to me and

my father.

Now we look into your questions one by one very shortly.

(1) Are tharpanams to be performed during the first year?

Yes you should do. The tharpanam should be done immediately after

Sapindeekarnam. (Pl. search messages I had given reasons already.)

(2) What should I do when the maasiyams/oonams are performed by my

eldest brother at home in Chennai (where our mother resides)?

If you are not elder, and the masyams are performed by your elder, you simple

keep fasting on that day, no more to do.

(3) What are the required rituals duing the Mahalaya paksham?

Sri vaishnavites are following " Sakrun Mahalayam " on any one of the Punyakaaalam

day as listed in the previous messages. Do according to that.

(4) for (2) and (3) what is expected of my wife?

In any vaideeka rituals wife is not a seperate person from a kartha. She is one

of the limb of him like hands and eyes. So that the wife should call her

husband's father as father, mother as mother, brother as brother and all other

relatives as what he calls. So gruhasthan is not allowed to do any dharmam

without his dharma pathni. If she is in periods, you could do any rituals for

that four days.

5) Regarding your fith question I can give you a suggestion but I or anybody

other than the acharyan can tell a perfect answer for it.

So, my suggestion is : You decide an acharyan to follow here after. You can

either continue with the Parakaala Madam Acharyas or switch to Sri Madam or Sri

Math Aandavan. You approach the SriKaaryam and put a proper request, he will

guide you for the rest of the things.
