Guest guest
Dear members, Can I enquire if any members on the list are knowledgeable in Gujarati wedding traditions? I have recently been approached by a gujarati friend of mine here in the UK, who is getting married in August. He informs me that as part of their wedding preparations, they have a function called " griha shaanti " the day before the wedding. He asked me to help perform the procedure for him. I assumed this is like 'vaastu homam', meaning infusing peace in the house. However, on searching the internet, many websites seem to say it is 'asking for peace in the planetary positions', which I guess should be called " graha shaanti " , but most of the websites do not properly distinguish between " graha " and " griha " . I learnt one version of the procedure for " vaastu homam " from a vAdhyAr in London which includes aavarthis for ganapati, navagrahas, saraswati, vastoshpati, gaayatri, suurya, rudra (I can't remember the order). Since this includes navagrahas already, I am a little confused, and want to check what their traditions are. Sri VAsu VAdhyAr swAmin has graciously and helpfully agreed to provide a procedure for vaastu homam. In the meanwhile, can I ask if anyone knows of this Gujarati pre-wedding function, and if so, can they clarify my doubt? many thanks, praNAmams, namO nArAyaNAya Ranjan *** With reference to your above message, now I came to know, that graha shanthi is no way connection to Vastu homam. Here what I think, the bad / malfunction planets with respect to the muhurtha lagnam, or with respect to the couple's janma lagnam are to be satisfied (shanthi) by offering the things mentioned/prescribed for them. But it is not good which enterfering in the vaideeka vishyams with assemptions. nvs
Guest guest
Dear Shri NVS swAmin, Thanks for your message and clarification. I will clarify with their family what exactly the function is which they perform on that day, and what those traditions are. Is the procedure for " graha shaanti " then very different? Is it possible to find out the procedure for this also? Presumably the couple need to provide their birth star details, etc. to work out what the " bad planets " are. I do not normally have much interest in things concerning astrology, but since my friend has asked me to help as part of his wedding ceremony, I would like to do what I can to help, if possible - mainly for the sake of the elders of his family who would be attending. Ranjan *** Dear Shri.Ranjan, Involving in astrology matter is not a sin. We are limitted to use it where sastras allows it. For example, Muhurtha Nirnayam, Thithi Nirnayam are all depend astrology, there we could not neglect it and we must do it. To help your friend, Ask him to provide some video clips of previous wedding for that particular part with sound. Then we can come to a conclusion about the procedures. If we are able to catch the sankalpam words and few lines of santhi manthram then we can develop it into a considerable shape. Otherwise it is better to accept our inability in this matter which will be very 'Uththamam'. nvs

Guest guest
Dear Deepak swAmin, Thank you for the kind link. It appears this discusses wedding rituals on the wedding day, whereas the griha shaanti is performed a day before the wedding, it seems. Sri NVS swAmin, thanks for your suggestion about the sankalpam. I have arranged to meet my friend and his parents to discuss what the sankalpam for the function is. In the meanwhile, for my own interest, can I find out what are the main four aavarthis done in Vaastu homam which you mentioned? Also I have written down from the teacher in London, what the manthrams for lighting the agni at the start and for wearing the ash at the end, using a tape recording I made of his recitation. Can I check what those manthrams are, as I am not sure I have copied them down correctly from the cassette tape. Also is the procedure for performing homams, wearing the bhasmam etc. same in all sampradaayams with just difference in the sankalpam, or are there some differences? many thanks, namO nArAyaNa praNAmams, Ranjan *** 1.Vaasthoshpathe Prathijaaneehi hyasmaan swaaveso anameevo bhavana: yathvemahe prathithanno jushasva sanna yethi dvipathe samchathuspathe Swaahaa - Vaasthoshpathaye idham na mama 2. Just now I came home from several muhurtha vaibhavams, and checked the mail and started typing from my memory without any reference in my hand. So, I hope there may be few mistakes in pronounciation and there may be a chance to miss a word to type. So, use this only for checking the manthrams with your hand. And I will send you the correct manthrams in sanskrit fonts later. regards, nvs vaideekam , Deepak Kumar Vasudevan <deepak.vasudevan wrote: > > Namaskarams, > > This link should help you in brief on Gujrathi Wedding: http://www.hindustanlink.com/matritext/gujaratiwedding.htm > ------- > Deepak Vasudevan > 91 98400 26014 > ------- >
