I shall be ever thankful if you kindly elucidate the following points and clear our doubts as early as possible. 1. Dos and donts during 10 day theetu period( as i am Karta for performing Apara karyam. ) and also during next one year. 2. I want to know whether i can play casette chanting slokas or upanyasam during 10 day period. 3. Whether i can read religious books or Gita upanyasam( telecasted daily in Podigai TV) during 10 day theetu period. 4. I understand Aradhnam is not compulsary during theetu as as per the reply furnished in the latest email reply furnished in Vaideekam group. i want to know whether we can take food without offering to God daily during Theetu period. I hope the valuable clarifi cation will be helpful to many persons and as there is divergent opinion on these and we consider your reply as authoritive one. Adiyan Chellappa *** Accept Our sincere Condolence. --- The actual dos and don't s will be very hard to keep. Some do s what I think possible to keep. Do not shave your face up to the end of Prabhudha bhali on 10th day. Do not comb your hair. Do not see the mirror. Do not wear Srichurnam wear only Thiruman without seeing mirror. Do sandhya vandhanam but only 10 gayathris. Do not drink coffee or anything before completing the Nithyavidhi. Take food only once a day in the afternoon. Phalaaharam can be taken in the nights. Do not meet outsiders if possible. Atleast avoid new meetings. Avoid hearing upanyasams and bhakthi vishayams. Nothing specified about watching TVs which can be done. Better use this 10 days to collect materials (through out the internet) how to perform the kainkaryam in a best way upto the end of Apthikam. Ask questions about your doubts to your Bruhaspathy and elders and post it here or send your experience to my personal mail ID. Which can be compiled and then posted here. Parishechanam is one simple type of offering food to God that is enough for the theetu days. After the end of 13th day, there is no difference between a normal man and the Kartha doing masikam except the following : 1. Do not perform Archanai or offer your pending prarthanai to perumals. 2. Do not enjoy the Gruhastha Ashrama life ... including thaamboolam, oil bath, using perfumes and cosmetics, sthree sangamam etc. etc. 3. Avoid celebrating all yearly pandigais. Note:- The functions arranged for upanayanam, Seemantham, Vivaham for your wards are not your karmas, they are their karmas which can be performed and in those karmas you can participate and bless the couple, but if possible avoid taking food. If you are a person who is not able to avoid taking food from the hotels, then you can take the foods of functions also. I hope that I have covered almost all the possible vishayams from my remembrance not checked any book due to urgency. My personal request or guidance : Give importance to do dhaanam on 12th day, spend as much as you can, and give the dhaanams to real brahmins who are doing sandhya vandhanam regularly, which is the real help given to your parents, all other rituals are not only for this atma. More over, the dhaanams are performed to release the papams from the atma to the person who is receiving the dhaanam. Knowingly or unknowingly most of the persons are offering this (money worthy) dhaanams to their maapillais, grand sons, etc. to re distribute the papham in their same family?! Understand the concept of dhaanam and avoid giving it to near and dear with which you are giving a huge amount of papam. nvs
