I hail from oppiliappankoil and settled in Kumbakonam. Usage of thread/plantain fiber in making garlands makes a interesting study. Even now in Thanjavur District flower shops in and around temples use only plantain fibres. I visited Sri Appakudathan Temple Divyadesam( Kovilady) last week and the battachar was very particular that for moolavar deity garlands made with fibre must only be offered and for Uthsavar thread garland is ok. The battachar was a very learned and old man , i am sure that he has lots of years of experience and sound knowledge of agama practice. Eagerly waiting for replies from learned members.
