I have heard of a sloka regarding head placing. svagrihe poorva shirasi anyagrihe pashchime uttare sarvatra varjayet. Meaning: In one's own house, head should be eastwards, In other's house, head should be westwards. Everywhere Northward should avoid head placing. So even southwards head can be placed. Scientifically, in magneto-therapy also I have read that, when you sleep with head to north, earth's magnetic field will flow from foot to head which is bad.
