According to Dharma SaastrAs , the optimal age

for Brahmin boys to undergo the Upanayana

SamskAram is 8 ( GarbhAshtamam) . It is 11 for

KshathriyAs and 12 for VaisyAs .

 

Please refer to the 40th e-book in the Ahobilavalli

series for additional details on Upanayanam and its

purpose and why there has been a stipulation to

observe this samskAram at age 8 for Brahmin

The title of this e-book is " Homa , Havis , Yaj~naa

and Hindu SamskArAs " .

 

It is better to have upanayanam later than not to have it at all.

Without the Upanayanam , one's eligibility for any Vaidhika Kaaryam

is nil . If you do not have upanayanam , the question of initiation

into Gayathri Mantram and Sandhya Vandanam does not arise .

[Vaideekam] Upanayanam and Savitri

 

Dear members,

 

I read somewhere on the net quoting references from different sources like

Vasistha, Yagnavalkya etc. about the age within which the upanayanam has to be

performed for a boy. For a brahmin boy, this age is 16. Also, it says that after

16 years of age, he has no rights on Savitri.

 

I know that there is the Gayatri (for the sun god - Savita?). So, if one has

upanaynam after the age of 16, is he allowed to chant Gayatri and do the other

japams.

 

I would like to know the details like what should a person who had his

upanayanam after 16 years keep in mind.
