Guest guest
Dear Sri Vasu Mama, Abhivadaye and namaskaramas. I had a query regarding the mangalyam that is worn by ladies after marriage. What is the special significance of the shape. I have seem Iyer women have a Shivalingam or Tulasi maadam on the mnagalayam and Iyengar women have the Shanku and Chakram. \can you please provide more information on this.  With Best Regards, Sandeep Subramanian *** Mangalya dharnam is a latest arrival, for which we don't have any vaideeka formula or prayogam in ancient books. Also, for this no special vedha manthram provided till date. Vaaranamayiram - by Andal is explaining the most important steps of a cultural vedic marriage, in which Andal is describing " Maithunan nambi madhusudhan vandhennai KAITHALAM PATRA kanaak kanden thozhi " . Hence she also told nothing about mangalyam. As per sastram, a piece of gold should be donated (as dhaanam) to the varan with the kannikai, to keep that gold in a safe and auspicious position people started to wear it as a jewel. Also people made a routine to engrave their own religious symbols in that gold piece. 15 years back I wrote a research article on this (which was published in major religious magazines) called " Ethukalyan Maangalyam thanthunaavaa? " . nvs
