Respected Sirs,

Kinly clarify the sitting position when performing the tharpanam,

Whether, we should sit facing East or South.

In the recent Nrusimmapriya edition it is noted that we should be

facing south, whereas, according to the printouts taken from

ahobilam.com, we should sit facing east.

which is correct?

Devanagari: & Diacritic version of sloga is uploaded in the files section as

Phonetic English:

smRuityantare ---

tarpaNaM tilamishraM pitRuunuddishy vaagyata:

Aasiina: praa~Nmukha: kuryaaddakshiNaabhimukho a~njaliM iti..

atra praa~NmukhatvadakshiNaamukhatvayorvikalpa:.

sarvametanniruupitamadhastaat..

Meaning:

The tharpaNam can be done either facing East or South, both are the same, where

they are all proved.

Practically most of the gruhastaas are doing facing East, in the same posture

from the beginning, but I myself just turning towards south and kneeling with

my left leg till the end of the tharpanam and again sitting in the normal pose

after final aachamanam( in kukudasanam) to recite the 'Satvika tyagam'.

All these type of discussions will be useful only to confuse and threaten the

normal gruhastas of larger percentage. But it will be useful for narrow minded

persons to exhibit their sastric knowledge.
