Dear Sri RaghunAthan :

Pithru DevathAs are not Jeevans .

They are a special class of DevathAs

with their own Pithru Lokam .

During Srushti , Pitru deVas and their seperate

lOkam have been created . Just as Agni , Vaayu

and other devathAs are important for our worldly

life (here), the Pitru dEvAs are equally important .

Therefore , 8 Vasus , 11 RudhrAs , 12 AadityAs

and few others have been created to serve as

Pitru dEvAs.They are hailed in our SrAddhams

and TarpaNams as " Vasu Rudhra Aadhitya

Svaroopa Pitru PitAmaha PrapitAmaha . We are

expected to do a minimum of 96 Sraaddha/TarpaNams

per year for them .Among the 96 ( nityams) are

the AmAvAsyai , MaasaiRappu , MahALayam ,

Vaidhruti , Manvantram , Ashtakaa , anvashtakA

TarpaNams . In addition to the above are :

GrahaNam , annual MaatA - Pithaa Sraadhams .

When there are 3 BrahmaNAs to particpate in

the observance of the SrAddham to represent

VisvOdEvAs , Pitrus and VsihNu , that assembly

is known as Visvadh ParishaD. They are welcomed

with Aasana , arghya , Paadhya Swaagatams

and worshipped with the mantrams lie :

Aagacchnatu MahaabhAgA ViswEdEvA mahaaBalaa:,

yE hyatra vihitaa: SrAddhE SaavadhAnaa bhavantu tE

The pitru dEvatAs are welcomed this way :

"AayAta pitara sOmyA gambheerai: pathibhi: poorvyai:

prajaamasmabhyam dhadhatO rayim cha dhergAyutvam cha

Sata Saradham cha--"

(Meaning): Oh Pitrus ! Please Come here with Joy ! Please bring with

You in an auspicious way our Poorvaas . Please bless us with long life

(Veda Praayam) prosperity and progeny .

Permission is then sought from Pithrus to perform

the required homam and SrAddham .

There are a lot of SishtAchArams observed

in conducting these Sradha/TarpaNams , which

Sriman Vaasu VaadhyAr has archived . Please refer to them .

This is a big subject and will need a lot of time to cover fully.

Swamin,

Thanks for forwarding HH Rangapriya Swami's answers on shraddham. But one aspect is not still clear.

It is said that after death the jeevan either goes to Moksham if he is prapannan, or to Naraka or to Bhuloka as another jeeva. It is clarified there that If a jeevan unfortunately reaches narakA, then the shrAdda karmas done for it by the people are taken up by the Pitr devatas (as the medium) From this it is clear that pitru devathas are devathas different from the jeevan himself, who may be either in moksham or naraka or bhumi.

But at another place it is said that Pitrs are very benevolent towards their lineage and grant (apeksham) all auspiciousness towards their vamsa. They bless the growth of their parampara (generations) of children, grand-children (parampara vrddhikaraNam).

So, if jeevas themselves are pitrus, to whom they take the shradha karmas as medium as stated above?

Thus at one place it is said jeevas become pitrus. and at another place it is said they are medium taking shradhha samarpanams to the jeeva concerned. I respectfully seek further clarification.

I sincerely and humbly request elucidation.

Dasan

Raghunathan
