I belong to Kancheepuram district and like to know if we do follow chandramasam for doing any festivals. Thanks in advance for your help. Guest guest
Swasti Sri, I think what you mean is chaandra maanam - meaning lunar calender. the word meaning is chaandra = pertaining to moon or of moon or related to moon; maanam = measure. years are measured by sowra maanam = solar calender; chaandra maanam = lunar calender; baarhaspatya maanam = jovian calender. in the north, and maharashtra, karnataka and andhra chaandra maana calender is used. initially all our festivals used to be marked on lunar calender basis. festivals/sacrifices such as chaaitri, agrahaayani, darsa and purna maasa ishtis etc. are all based on lunar systems. however, in kerala, tamil nadu, bengal, punjab, people have shifted to solar calender (sowra maanam) festivals are marked with reference to sun position as well as moon positions. adiyen vitahavya vaideekam , Kalyani Rajagopalan <kalyanimksampath wrote: > > Hello, > > I have a question.
