Guest guest
Respected swamin, My husband encounters this problem on some Deepavali day, when Amavasya falls on that day. We have noticed in our friends and relatives circle, three types of approach, when some one has to do 'tharpanam' on that day: 1. Some take oil bath before sunrise, eat some sweets and idlies, wear new dress. Sometime after sunrise, they take again bath, wear 'madi' vastram and do the tharpanam. 2. Some others do not take oil bath, wait for sunrise, take ordinary bath, wear 'madi' vastram and do the tarpanam. 3. There is a third category, who do like the one mentioned in the 1, take oil bath, wear new clothes, but DO NOT TAKE ANY EDIBLES. After sunrise, they wear 'madi' vastram, do the tharpanam. Is there any prescribed method in the sastras, or it is only a convention convenient to the individuals? Kindly clarify. GJ Sri: The third one is the correct. Shastram is very hard even for Vidwans some times, but it is very easy for novice also if we follow a simple logic. The simple logic is the preference among things and persons. The order of preference is: Deivam, Pitru, Manushya If it happens to worship Deivam and Pitru in a same day then Deiva kaaryam takes preference, then pitru kaaryam and then manushya kaaryam. In the mean time, if there is a thing with time specific, that takes the preference. If we take the Deepavali for example: The Ganga Snanam is time specific (should be done in the Brahma muhurta) so, it takes the preference, So we should take the oil bath at that time and continuously we can celebrate the Deepavali by wearing new cloths, firing crackers etc. without eating anything. Tarpanam is also time specific which is stated as after madhyahnigam and after (Nitya) Aaradhanam, So, to keep the madi, we have take bath again and should wear the madi vastrams, and do the madhyahnigam then Aradhanam, then pitru tarpanam, then Perumal deertam sweekaranam, then deepavali lehiyam, sweets, idlis etc.etc.etc. Note: Pratah sandhi should be done in the specific time, can be done with the new cloths also. nvs
