Guest guest
Pranaams to all. Adiyen heard in one Sharanagati Upanyasam by Sri Raman Thatachariar Swamin that ekadesi upavasam should not be observed by brahmachari. Adiyen would like to know more about the taboo and confirm it vide any pranaamam if possible. By this adiyen does not doubt or challenge swamin's words, but merely would like beg for more information. Adiyen observes ekadesi upavasam and being a brahmachari and certainly wants to avoid it if it contradicts with 2nd angam (praathi koolya varjanam) of prapatti. Thanks, Dasan, Narayanan
Guest guest
SrI: Dear Sri Narayanan: The best route to clarify is to ask the UpanyAsakar himself . The term BrahmachAri extends from say seven year old learning Vedam in Gurukulam to Naishtika BrahmachAri of 70 and beyond . Our Compassionate Saastrams suggest that the very young ( School going children) and old people , as well as women , Pregnant and nursing Mothers) and others with their many domestic responsibilities can and should relax on the severity of the observance of EkAdasi Vratams lest they harm their health . SuddhOpavAsam ( nirjala upavAsam etc) are strictly not recommended for them to avoid health complications . In modern days , you have to be sensitive to Professionals driving miles to work , attending long meetings all day and trying to focus on their work . If they fade out or faint , it is not worth it . I know of friends with hypo glycemia getting into difficulties . Moderation is the wise route . Fruits , Milk , limitations in input with broken grains are recommended until you are able to cope with the rigors of full fasting . Please remember the wise saying : " Sareeram Aadhyam khalu Dharma Saadhanam " ( For practising dharmAs , the body is the prime requisite). Thoughts about Bhagavaan ( Bhagavath chintanam and SmaraNam) are very important on EkAdasi day . Listening to or reciting Acchidhram , AswamEdham Veda BhAgams are important . Reciting Sri VishNu Sahasra Naamam is important . Visiting a Temple of Sriman NarayaNan is important .That is the substance . One has to be careful to take the Saaram and understand the reasons why we observe such vratams like EkAdasi than just doing it for doing's sake . There is so much confusion between form and substance in many cases . EkAdasi day is an ennobling day . If one can , one should observe both EkAdasi and DhvAdasi Paaranai. Latter in some people's opinion is even more important than EkAdasi or SravaNa dinam fasting . In summary , Observe EkAdasi Vratam as long as you can without driving the system to physical endurance limits . Shutting or slowing down the digestive systems for a day or large portion of it has distinct health advantages and if the spiritual saadhanaa can be brought to the forefront , it will be a wonderful combination . Medical Sciences have established that the body and the brain grow and reach a plateau in growth around 25 . - " Narayanan " <sendtonarayanan <Oppiliappan > Tuesday, April 07, 2009 7:30 AM Ekadesi for bramachari > Pranaams to all. > > Adiyen heard in one Sharanagati Upanyasam by Sri Raman Thatachariar Swamin > that ekadesi upavasam should not be observed by brahmachari.
