Guest guest
SrI:Dear AastikAs belonging to the Vaidhika Paramparai :In the last few days , a strange book from a Harvard Academician has gained a lot of attention and caused a lot of pain to the AastikA world .The Title of the book is : " Beyond Compare: St.Francis and Sri Vedanta Desika on loving surrender to God".True , when it comes to the extraordinary contributions of Sri Vedanta Desika(1268-1369) , it can not be compared to the miniscule efforts of the Bishop of Geneva , Francis de Sales ( 1567-1622 C.E) ,who worked very hard as a Catholic Bishop to convert the Protestants in the land of John Calvin (1509-1564 C.E) , the leader of the Reformist Church . The barbarism and cruelty of the fights between these two categories of churches does not need to be elaborated upon . The labor of the Bishop of Geneva to advance the Catholic interests was recognized by the Pope of that time thru the elevation of St.Francis de Sale to Sainthood in the Catholic Church hierarchy . The tireless polemics between the two churches continues even today on Predetermination , free will , number of sacraments etc. In all these disputations , the rigor and the depth of logic enshrined in the grand Sri Sooktis of Swamy Desikan in rejecting the Para Mathams can not be seen in the works of the Bishop of Geneva . It is a waste of time to compare them . It is like comparing Himalayas with an anthill on the road side of human philosophical and Theological history . It is an apachAram of the gravest kind to compare Swamy Desikan's upadEsams on SaraNAgati to preachings of some one from Veda Baahya Matham like Christianity . Inspite of the appeal of comparitive religion studies , it is a waste of time to reconcile these doctrines in the context of their theologies . Swamy Desikan studied the tangled theories of Para mathams of his times and recorded their fallacies in His great Sri Sooktis like Para matha Bhangam , Tattva Mukta KalApam , Sata dhUshaNi , SarvArtha Siddhi , sEswara MeemAmsa and NyAya SiddhAnjana et al .He followed the golden steps of AchArya RaamAnuja to reject these kumati and Kudhrushti Mathams of his time in establishing the Paratvam of Sriman Narayana and the loftiness of SaraNagathi as an Upaayam to attain the Supreme Goal of Life . In His Rakshaa Grantams (NikshEpa Rakshaa) , NyAsa Thrayee , SaraNAgathi Dheepikai and in His ChillaRai rahasyams , he reminded us about the importance of learning about the three Tattvams , artha Panchakam and the angams of sampradhAyic SaraNAgati . In Srimath Rahasya Traya Saaram and VirOdha ParihAram , he organized the doctrines about the three sacred most rahsyams and helped us as a concerned AchAryan and resolved any lingering doubts that we may still have . Compared to these monumental and unparalleled efforts , the narrow contributions of Francis de Sale on self-surrender pales into insignificance. We do not need any other guidance other than those of AchArya RaamAnuja and Swamy Desikan . Swamy Desikan's upadEsams are like an eternal AkaNDa dheepam for us and the rest are like the flashings of a fire fly ( Min Mini Poocchi) at night . Let us not be distracted by these comparitive studies of modern day religions going back to 1300 to 2000 years , while we have the JyOthi and Staff of Swamy Desikan's Sri Sooktis based on the eternal VedAs and the sanatana dharman to guide and support us during our life on earth and to perform Saastraic SaraNAgathy to enjoy MokshAnugraham at Sri VaikunTham. The Vaibhaavm of Swamy Desikan and His unique contributions as an AchAryan has been saluted by His many successors and covered in the Sundarasimham(SS) , Ahobilavalli(AH) and Sri Hayagrivan ebook series(SH) for your reference : Sundara Simham link http://www.sundarasimham.org Ahobilavalli Link http://www.ahobilavalli.org Sri Hayagrivan Link http://www.srihayagrivan.org Vaibhavam of Swamy Desikan ************************************* 1.
