Gist

O Lord rAma! O Merciful Lord!

Is it justified to be capricious in talking to me who, considering You alone to be my constant companion (like a shadow), is endowed with devotion towards You and has held Your Feet?

When AnjanEya – born of Wind God as an aspect of Lord Siva and also being erudite, saluted You (and enquired about You), You asked lakSmaNa to convey the details to him; however, is it justified to be capricious in talking to this tyAgarAja even if he talks to You?

Word-by-word Meaning

P O Lord (ayya) rAma (rAmayya)! Is it justified (galadA) to be capricious (mODi) in talking (mATalu Ada) (mATalADa) to me?

A O Lord rAma! Is it justified to be capricious in talking (mATalADa) to me (nAtO) who - considering You alone (nIvE) to be (anucunu) (nIvEyanucunu) my constant companion (tODu nIDa) (like a shadow), is endowed with (gUDina) devotion (bhakti) towards You and has held (paTTina) Your Feet (pAdamu)?

C O Merciful Lord (sadayuDa)! When AnjanEya – born (saMbhavuDu) of Wind God (ASuga) (literally quick moving) (sadayuDAzuga) as an aspect (aMSuDai) of Lord Siva (SaGkara) (SaGkarAMSuDai) and also being erudite (caduvulu anni telisi) (literally one who has mastered all) (caduvulanni), saluted (mrokka) You (and enquired about You), You asked (jEsitivi) (literally do) lakSmaNa - your younger brother (tammuni) to convey (palka) the details (kadalu) (literally stories) to him; however (gAkanu), is it justified to be capricious in talking (mATalADa) to this tyAgarAja (tyAgarAju) even if he talks (ADina) to You?

Notes –

P – galadA – this is how it is given in the books of CR and ATK. However, in the books of TKG and TSV/AKG, this is given as ‘galadE’. The whole kRti is in second person, whereas, ‘galadE’ is in third person. Therefore, ‘galadA’ is the appropriate word. This needs to be checked. Any suggestions ???

C – SaGkara aMSuDu – The story of how AnjanEya came to be described as a portion of Lord Siva is given in the following website –

http://www..com/story_of_hanuman.htm

C – tammuni palka – In their first meeting between AJjanEya and SrI rAma, the latter, while appreciated the scholarship of AJjanEya, did not directly talk to him, but asked lakSmaNa to speak to him. Please refer to SrImad vAlmIki rAmAyaNa – kiSkindA kANDa – Chapter 3.

Additional Comments by Sri V.Sadagopan :

This kriti is set in the 26th MeLa rAgam, CharukEsi, the lady who has the most beautiful tresses of hair. CharukEsi is also endearingly called “the eternal enchantress†because of its prayOgams. In Dikshitar’s sampradhAyam (asampoorNa mELa kartA system), CharukEsi is named as “TarangiNiâ€, a most pleasing rows and rows of ocean waves. JayadevA’s ashtapati, “paSyati diSi diSi†and Swati ThirunAL’s “Krupayaa pAlaya SowrE†are also set in ChArukEsi rAgam.

Late GhAna KalAdhara Madurai MaNi Iyer, M.L. Vasanta KumAri and the nephew of Madurai MaNi Iyer, Sri T.V.SankaranArayaNan have rendered “AaDamODi galadaa†elaborately and enchantingly.

Saint ThyagarAja used the CharukEsi rAgam in his kriti, “AaDa mODi galadA Raamayya†to express his anger, grievance and remonstrance (amarsha-rOsha-rOshOkti sanchAri bhAvam). Here, ThyAgarAja Swamy is appalled at the indifference of the Lord and asks the Lord to explain why He hesitates to talk to him, when he is seeking the Lord as the only friend and holding on to His feet with great bhakti. He reminds the Lord that such indifferent and odd behavior is perhaps nothing new and cites the time when during RaamAvatAram, He avoided speaking directly to AnjanEya, the amsam of Sivaa, when latter approached Him at KishkindhA and instructed LakshmaNaa to speak to AnjanEya instead of talking directly to him.

There are many kritis set in the Amarsh-rOsha-rOshOkti mood, where the disappointed ThyagarAja Swamy protests and shows his anger. In one of the “Phalamanjari kritis, SanAtana ! Parama Paavana ghanAghana varNa! KamalAnAna!â€, ThyaagarAja SwamigaL will question the Lord tightly and ask Him to explain why He as a God does not show any affection or interest in one, who is His own ? In this mood, SwamigaL will ask in a Kokiladhvani raga Kriti (KoniyADEDu nAyEDa dhaya vElaku) as to why the Lord is still bargaining with him inspite of the fact that he has been adoring the Lord all the time, eulogizing Him with love as a pativratai engaged in serving her Lord? In the Kannada kriti, SaakEta NikEtana, ThyagarAja SwamigaL will ask: “Why is this indifference? Please do not plead any excuse for Your confusing behavior. I will be obliged to reproach Youâ€. The rightful indignation of one who has been wronged is expressed in the Amarsha rOsha rOshOkti kritis like AaDa-mODi galadhA Raamayaaâ€.
