In our siddhAntam , there are many kinds of ratnams(gems).There are PurANa ratnams ( VishNu purANam ), Mantra Ratnam ( dhvayam) , Kaavya ratnam ( Sri

YaadhavAbhudhayam) , StOtra Ratnam et al .

 

The ratnam in each category has been defined as the best (SrEshtam) in that category (jaati) : " jAthou jAthou tu yat SrEshtam Tadh ratnam iti kathyatE ".

 

In this context , the title of AchArya Ratnam belongs to this MahAn : Srimath VedamArga PratishtApanAchArya,Paramahamsa-parivrajakAchArya, Sarvatantra svatantrOpAya , VedAntAchArya , Sri Bhagavath RaamAnuja SiddhAnta NirdhAraNa Saarvabhouma , Srimann NigamAta Mahaa Desika Pravartita SathsampradhAya

What are the NINE LakshaNams of a Ratnam ?

 

Sri ChEtlUr Swamy says: In the bhAshyam for StOtra Ratnam , Swamy Desikan provided the nine attributes of a Ratnam this way : (1) it is blemishless ( dhOsha rahitam) ,(2) it is changeless( nilai Aanathu), (3) Easily transportable (4) needs careful protection, (5) most enjoyable( parama bhOgyam), (6) Power to explain other objects , (7) worthy of celebration, (8) Priceless and (9) fit for reverence .

 

The original Sanskrit Text of Swamy Desikan defining these NINE LakshaNams is :

atrAsam Maanadham ratnam sthiram bhOgyam prakASakam

mahArgam mangaLam mAnyam suraksham sugraham nruNAm

 

U.Ve ChEtlUr SrivatsAngAcchAr Swamy presented the AchArya Ratnam with a special celebratory slOkam following the thought lines of Swamy Desikan :

 

sadhratnam trAsaheenam taralasugatikam svAtibhOtthArchanArham

 

muktAsooti prabhADyam NaraharihrudhayaarOhadhanyam varENyam

 

AasthAnirvODDa Subhram sulabhaBahumatam vijn~ahrudhyam guNOdhgam

In this brilliant slOkam reminding us of the lakshaNams of the Ratnams as per Ratna Saastra grantams and drawing pramANams from Sri VishNu PurANam ( Astra-bhUshaNa and Taapa TrayaadhyAyams) , U.Ve . ChetlUr SrivatsAngAcchAr Swamy

has made an outstanding case for the Bhirudhu of AchArya Ratnam for Sri
