Dear All Desika BhakthAs :

 

After yesterday's posting on Tattva Mukta KalApam , it occurred to me that the best way to pay tribute to Swamy Desikan is thru the study of the celebratory poems( Paayirams) about Swamy Desikan by His direct line of sishyAs . This will help us understand why hundreds of Makara Kandi samarpaNams wont be sufficent to express our sense of gratitude to the great UpakArams that he has done for us . adiyEn has decided to cover the remaining 95 Paayirams of Sri Desika NooRRandhAti .

iRiayum emakkAy iruL akaRRum tEsAy

kaRiayil guNam koL kaDavuLOnAy – maRai anaittum

vAzhvitta vAdiyar cIyam iv vaiayagattil

Azhtuyar ellAm aRukkum Ayndu.

 

Meaning: Swamy Desikan is our veritable God and is the radiant light of Jn~Anam that chases away the darkness of our ajn~Anam thru the blessings of His many VedAntha grantams and rahasya grantams . He is like the Lord Himself with His blemishless attributes( KaRayil guNam koLL KadavuL) ; He protected the VedAs from the misintrepretations by Para Mata Vaadhins and nourished them ( MaRai anaithum Vaazhvitthavar) . He is frightening like a lion for the opponents of the sacred doctrines of VisishtAdhvaitam ( Vaadhiyar Seeyam) . He has the compassion to comprehend the mighty sufferings of all the samsAris and has the power to destroy them thru His sadhupadEsams housed in His Sri Sookthis.

 

Comments: Mannappa IyengAr ( Theertha PiLLai) , the author of Desika NooRRandhAti salutes Swamy Desikan as a God in this Paayiram . The author follows the path shown by his own AchAryan , NayinAcchAr, who paid similar tributes to His Father and AchAryan , Swamy Desikan , in the verses of His PiLLai andhAti(PA) :

 

ThiruvenkadanAthan yenum guruvAi ninRu nihanzhtu

maNN mEl ninRa nOykaL tavittananE --- PA 5 :

 

Here , NayinAcchAr reveals that ThiruvenkatamudayAn incarnated as Swamy Desikan , the VedAntha AchAryan and chased away all the ills of samsAram .

 

"VinaikAL umakku ini vERu ohr idam tEda vENDum" ---PA 7 ( oh ! the miseries which plagued me until now should find some other place to reside now). The other passage from PA that is pertinent is : " adaibavar theevinai mARRi aruL tarum ThUppul Iyya! " ( He is the exalted being , who removes the paapams of those who sought refuge at His sacred feet ).

 

The above passages of PA are echoed in Mannappa IyengAr's paayiram section: " ivvayahatthil Aazh tuyar yellam aRukkum Aaynthu ".

 

Thus , in this Paayiram , Mannappa IyengAr praises Swamy Desikan as BhagavAn Himself .
