Guest guest
SrI: SrImathE Ramanujaya namah: Dearest Srivaishnavas, This AzhwAr- PeriyAzhwAr started with ThiruppallANdu addressing KaNNan as mallANda thiNthOL maNivaNNA! (The one who has strongest sholduders to conquer and kill wrestlers!) and then shifted to Rama (iraaKkadhar ilankai paazhaaLAgap padia poruthaanukku pallANdu kooRudhumE..). he also sang about his other great avatars and finally said, namo nArAyaNaa yenRu naamam pala paravi… Thus AzhwAt enjoyed KaNNan so far; now from next ten He sings about Rama and then archaavatars upto ThiruvEmkatam. Before that this is a stop gap which smoothly transforms from KaNNan to Raman and so divinely. This set of 11 verses is so beautiful that it is like kummiyaataam by young girls. In the last pAsuram, AzhwAr refers to “undhi paRandhavoLiyizhaiyArgaL.. “. Undhi- raising oneself; Also paRa can be referred to (flying up in the air by jumping). Thus young girls (assume tow sets of girls), one set singing about KaNNan and jumping to beat the kOlAttam. Even when one reads the lines one can imagine and visualize the jumping and dancing while singing. The second set immediately in the next pAsurams sings on Rama. One can say that these girls are Gopis or they need not be also. It is all the enjoyment of AzhwAr is the bottom-line. One needs to enjoy these verses slowly and steadily and hence we will post them in three posts for enjoyment. ennaathan_dhEvikku anRu_inbappoo_eeyaadhaaL than naadhan_kaaNavE thaNpoomaraththinai vannaadhappuLLaal valiyappaRiththitta ennaadhanvanmaiyaippaadippaRa empiraanvanmaiyaippaadippaRa. 1. En nAthan- My nAthan- KaNNan for His Devi- divine consort Sathyabama, when she along with Her Master went for fighting and killing Narakasura and came to indra bhavanam (Devendran’s place) the spouse of Indra (Indrani) adorned her tresses with Paarijatha flowers without giving to this human lady (Sathyabama). When Devendran was seeing, KaNNan plucked the whole tree (conquering Devendran – who had forgotten KaNNan’s mercy in killing in Narakasura for the sake of Devas happened just then) for the sake of Sathyabama and planted the same in Sathyabama’s garden. Fly singing the strength of KaNNan; Fly singing about my Piraan.. After NarakAsura samhAram, KaNNan captured the ear studs of adhithi Devi from the asura, went to the heaven (Deva lokam) along with Sathyabama on Garuda to hand over the studs. Devendran welcomed him and at that time, IndrAni adorned her hairs with Paarijatha flower (which is meant for Devas as it grows only there) and did not give to Sathyabama as she was only a human being (or misunderstood as human) She expressed her desire to have that tree and rest is history. It was KaNNan who sent Garuda to bring the tree; though Garuda brought the tree, it shows KaNNan’s strength. VedAthmA vihakEswara: Hence the strength can also be attributed to the VedAswarUpi Garuda as well. The second set of girls start now with Rama. They actually sing chronologically on Rama’s life while for KaNNan it is not that so; But readers can enjoy the relevance of the two PAsurams and their events with their imaginations and anubhavams as well. envilvalikaNdu pOvenRu_edhirvandhaan than villinOdum thavaththai_edhirvaangi munvilvaliththu mudhupeNNuyiruNdaan than villinvanmaiyaippaadippaRa dhaasaradhithanmaiyaippadippaRa. 2. After getting wedded to SitA and while coming back, see the strength of my bow and go – said ParasurAmA; In front of His eyes, Rama snatched away his bow and his thapas also and earlier bending his bow he swallowed the life of the old Raakshasi ThAdakai – sing dancing in praise of the strength of Rama’s bow which destroyed SubAhU and others; Sing dancing the way Chakravartthi Thirumagan –Rama- was.. The Baala kANdam is described briefly here. Till He went with Sage ViswAmithra he was the darling son of Dasaratha. Hence dAsratahi thanmaiyai paadi paRa. He bent Siva dhanus and married SitA PiraaTTi; The next PAsuram discusses about KaNNan’s wedding Rukmini PiraaTTi. uruppiNin^angaiyaith thErERRikkoNdu viruppuRRangEka viraindhu_edhirvandhu serukkuRRaan veeramsidhaiya thalaiyaich chiraiththittaanvanmaiyaippaadippaRa dhEvakisingaththaippaadippaRa. 3. Holding Rukmini PiraaTTi by hand, KaNNan lifted her to his chariot to take her away from her brothers and SisupAlan; got her nod to drive them away and ride the chariot towards Dwaraka. On the way her brother Rukmi arrogantly fought with KaNNan and got himself saved (due to the mercy of Rukmini) and had his head shaved off by KaNNan; Sing dancing the valour and strength of KaNNan and his paraakramam. Sing dancing the lion cub of Devaki. Devaki singatthai paadi paRa Rukmini having heard of the greatness of KaNNan sent a message and letter to KaNNan through a Brahmin (sruthvA guNAn bhuvana sundara!) for saving her from the plan of her brother Rukimi to marry her off to SisupAlan whom she did not wish to marry. She wanted to marry only KaNNan. She mentioned that she would (as an excuse) come to Gowri temple before the wedding and KaNNan needs to come there and save her from the wolf’s hands (SisupAlan). Everyone was there including Jarasandhan, Rukmi and the other brothers of Rukmani to protect her from KaNNan (!). kaNNan while playing with Rukmini (on the chariot) fought playfully and effortlessly with them who came to fight with KaNNan and conquered them. He drove them away touching their heels on their heads. Rukmi alome arrogantly fought thinking that none can conquer him. He came with his army and got himsell at a losing end soonest. KaNNan did not kill him heeding to Rukmini’s plea to save her brother’s life. He only shaved off his head adorned his mottai with black and red dots and sent him back to his place. He did not go back as he was ashamed and hence stayed at the same place. Here since it was the wedding with Khasthriya kulam, AzhwAr refers KaNNan as Devaki singam (being the son of Kshathriya kulam) and not as yasOdhaithan singam..
