Understanding the purport of Charamaslokam

Dear Respected Bhagavata-s,

I need some advice/clarification from elder members. It is well know

that Bhagavan instructs Arjuna to give up Dharma in the charama

slokam. My question is which Dharma? Is it chaturvarnAsharama dharma?

That is the only Dharma i can think of.

Bhagavan also says that smriti-s are his commands. Given that there

are so many smriti-s and to add to that so many contradictions among

them, i find it difficult to accept that bhagavan would issue such

contradictory commands.

Following the same, I have another doubt about the validity of

Upa-brahmana-s. The exception is Bhagavad Gita, which Bhagavan

himself gave to posterity not Humans who gave us the smriti-s. I find

no sources of authority of varnAsharma dharma in the Vedam. Bhagavan

also does not explicity mention this in the Giitai.

For example, the Yaksha Prashnam is quite contradictory to other

dharma injunctions.

Please excuse me for this mail. I do not intend to question the

validity of the Dharma Sastra-s, but to understand more their

relation with the Shruti.

Regards,

Malolan Cadambi
