Introduction to the prabandam (avathArikA) 2. VAzhththu cheiyuL and meaning (only the first 2 poems have been presented out of 20. The balance will continue in the next postings.) 3. Abstract Introduction to the Prabandam It is known from Madurakavi AzhvAr's kaNNinuN chiRuthAmbu that the only way for us is to follow the path laid by our AchAryas. 'One who has an AchAryA knows God' - " AcharyavAn purushO vEda: " [AchAryA here means only our sadAchAryAs and not the vEshadAri-outsiders]. Meditating deeply on the meaning conveyed by this, the author brings about the kalyNa gunAs of nammAzhvAr in this prabandam, like a fierce overflow of water. [maDai thiRantha nadi] VAzhththu CheiyuL and pAyiram: 1.aadip parimugan ambuyaththAL vAzhmArban* nAdayAmu nAryar naduviLanga – sOdiyen* aasiriyar EeRRAi avargaL thoDarOdi* dEsikargaL thALadainthen thErnthu. He is paying his obeisance to the sacred feet of all the AchAryAs of the parama vaidIka srIvaishNava matam in descending order. Lord srI HayagrIva, who is inseparably associated with srI.mahAlakshmi, is the first AchAryan in this guruparamparA. Nathamuni and yAmuna muni are in the centre. The author meditates on all the AchAryAs in the paramparA ending with his immediate AchAryA and surrenders to their lotus feet. The term " ThErnthu " indicates that he has well thought of the `pramANa balam " and " sampradAya balam " of this matam. (refer srI.Hari's Ramanuja darshanam part-1 and part-2 posted in this group, /message/4380.) 2 thadaigaL thagarththaruLvAn* dAmO daranin padaiththalaivan vaNpirambAl pangAi – nadaipeRach cheivAn ulaganeethi * seerAR sAtAriguru* peithan aruLAm peyal. Before starting his prabandam on AzhvAr, he is celebrating srI VishvaksEnar, who is the AchAryan of AzhvAr and we know that AzhvAr is nothing but the amsAvatAram of srI VishvaksEnar. Fondly called as " sEnai mudaliyAr " , he is the chieftain of vishnu sEnai; he is the one maintaining justice in the whole universe just with his powerful stick; he is aSesha vigna samar and he is the guru of all-merciful nammAzhvAr (sIrAr SatAriguru). He poured his rain of mercy on the AzhvAr. Abstract: For us, AcharyAs are everything as envisaged in kaNNinuN chiRuththAmbu and from the intimate AchArya-Sishya relationship between nammAzhvAr and vishvaksEnar. We shall continue the vAzhththu-poems in the next postings. ADiyEn Mukundan rAmAnuja dAsan P.S. The country, which reminds us of our dear Singa-perumAL has nammAzhvAr's thirunakshatram as public holiday every year. (Please forgive aDiyEn for the mistakes in tranlation and any typos.)
