The basic duties of a srIvaishNavan are indicated in this poem. As srIvaishNavas, always we have to celebrate AzhvArs and our AchAryAs; always we have to talk and meditate on their divya prabhAvams and always we have to be in association with srIvaishNavAs (toNDar kulam). This poem reminds us of the 6 great commandments of our pirAnetIsan, srImad rAmAnujar. 6 mAtA pitAguru mAcchelvam kalviyelAm * vedAnta dESikan vEnkaTESan – pAdAra * vindangaL enRaDiyEn vIruDan kaNDaDaindEn * sandadamum mAlkaNDai sArvu. Tribute is paid to the great AchAryan, svAmi dESikan, who is the divyAvatAram of tirupati vEnkaTESa perumAL's divine bell. The divine lotus feet of svAmi dESikan are nothing but our Close relatives, well- earned wealth, gained knowledge, the means and goal – everything. It has to be remembered always. 7 gyAni enuyirenRAn nAraNan gItaiyil * gyAni evarenRAl nanRaga – tAninidAi * endai SaTAri elAmkaNNan enRuraittAr * vindaiyO kELvi viDai. BhagvAn SrI KrishNa says in the gItA: " gyAni tu Atma Eva mE matam,sa mahAtmA sudurlabha: " gyAni is like Atman of bhagavAn Himself. Surprisingly, in tiruvAimozhi nammAzhvAr says: " uNNum sORu, parugum nIr, tinnum veRRilai ellAm kaNNan " (tiruvAi. 76.7.1). BhagvAn throws a strange question to us ` Who is that gyAni?' and the answer can be found only in dramiDOpanishad. It is clear that nammAzhvAr is that gyAni. Abstract: As part of vAzhttuppA, the way of life of a srIvaishNavan is indicated in the first poem. After paying tribute to the AchAryan in the second, it comes to AzhvAr and asserts that he is the gyAni, dearest to emperumAn. We shall continue the vAzhththu-poems in the next postings.
