Dear srI vaishNavAs,

" I have no Lord other than nammAzhvAr. I will go everywhere, singing and

spreading his sweet pAsurams " – Madurakavi AzhvAr

AzhvAr’s chinmudrA prabhAvam is shown in this pAsuram. (In 'chinmudrA', index

finger and the thumb are joined in a circle while the other three fingers are

held together).

Being a steady contemplator on srIman nArAyaNA, the AzhvAr who wears the garland

of vakuLa flowers, made the VedAs in most enjoyable tamizh and gave it to

bhAgavatAs as a rain of nectar. With his right-hand chinmudrA itself, he blesses

us with the knowledge of tatva-hita-purushArtam.

As kulapati of srIvaishNavas and head of lineage of prapannAs, AzhvAr did his

bhara-nyAsam (with all its elements namely

AanukUlya sankalpam, prAtikUlya varjanam, mahA viSwAsam,

gOptruva varaNam and kArpaNyam) declaring ‘vEdAchala patiyAm srInivAsan

aDikkeezh amarndu pugundEn’. To teach what he practiced, he held chinmudrA and

sat in meditation under the ‘AdiSesha-incarnate’ Tamarind tree. To get his

blessings, just visit AzhvAr’s birth place, tirukkurugUr.

After surrendering to perumAL, nammAzhvAr underwent the experiences of

parabhakti, paragyAnam, paramabhakti and finally bhagavat sAkshAtkAram. Like

kaNNApirAn holding chinmudrA while doing gyAnOpadEsam, nammAzhvAr also held

chinmudrA in his flower-like-soft tirukkaram. This pAsuram emphasises on

surrendering to the sacred feet of AzhvAr to get uninterrupted kaimkarya

bhAgyam.

Abstract:

These 3 poems cover the opulences of chinmudrA of nammAzhvAr.

We shall continue the vAzhththu-poems in the next postings.
