Prabhandam - pAsuram 49 2. Pearls from the poems SS-49 tiraNDa amudat tirumagaL nAthan * iraNDu vibhUtigaLai eeNDu – maruNDayiruL * soonyachin mAttira soozhcchivenRu kAttavar * gyAni parAnkuSar nambu. Even in nammAzhvAr's time, even while the paramAtmA was readily present here as SrI KrishNA, there were existing many different matams. Some would say `sarvam soonyam', without considering the eternal Sruti as their base. Others would say `brahmam is nirviSEsha chin mAtram', still pretending to have Sruti as the base for their siddhAntam. They would propose many variations such as adhyAsam, bheda-traya-rahitam etc., all against Sruti vAkyams. It is all because of their agyAnam that they put forth so many jalpa vAdams to support their theories. Even when the paramAtmA Himself elaborated His true nature and the two upAyams to reach Him, it was all not helpful in curtailing these jalpavAdis. In that baffling circumstances, occurred the avatAram of the great gyAni, parAnkuSar. He is rightly called so, as, only a goad can bring a mad elephant to control. Endowed with untiring knowledge and wisdom, this AzhvAr conquered all these baseless matams. His SrIsooktis were fully based on `suDar migu surudi'. This AzhvAr proved that only the Sriya: pati, SrIman nArAyaNA is the parabrahma bhUta purushOttaman and He has leelA vibhUti and nitya vibhUti as His SarIram. That is the reason for this AzhvAr being revered as our pratama- AchAryan (next only to perumAL, pirATTi and vishNu-anIkESar) and as our kulapati. Pearls from the poems: It has been brought up here that a great gyAni dearer to emperumAn can destroy all baseless theories, however nicely one argues.
