Today's Vedic Topic is how the Human speech is formed according to the Vedic wisdom and How the modern neuro-anatomy research supports it. It is astounding how our Vedic seers percieved thru their powerful intuition what the modern day science is establishing with such laborious effort.

 

We shall in this context study the Crypto-Numerical Verse from Rg Vedam ( I.164.45) dealing with human speech . This mantram is also found in the Atharva Vedam(IX.10.27):

 

chatvAri vaak parimitA padhAni

tAni vidhurBrahmaNaa yE maneeshiNa:

guhA trANi nihitA nEngayanti

tureeyam vAcham manushyA vadhanti

 

The origin of the human speech in FOUR stages described by the above mantram is elaborated by Nirukta (XIII.9) . Nirukta says , Human speech is calibrated into FOUR divisions.The three of the four entities are kept in "Close concealment" ( guhA) and cause no motion/movement .Men speak only the fourth ( Vaikhari) . Rest of the concealed three are Paraa, PaSyanti and madhyamaa.The higher three forms of speech are

"hidden " ( guhaa).

 

Vaikhari is the physical sound one hears with one's ears .This is the grossest level of speech (loukeeka bhAshaa).This is also described as the physical consciousness .

 

Madhyama is defined as the verbal thoughts heard with one's inner ear.

This is described as the mental consciousness .

 

PaSyanti is the set of abstract concepts percieved in one's higher mind. Intellectual consciousness that which can be seen or visualized ( color or Form).

 

Paraa Vaak is the unmanifest meaning inherent in silence .This is the transcendental consciousness or the highest form , which is beyond the perception of senses.This is PraNavam:

" Yadhaksharam Veda-vidhO vadanti"

( Those knowers of VedAs recite this aksharam , Om). " OmityEkAksharam"

says another Veda Mantram.

 

Srimadh BhAgavatam explains these four kinds of speech elaborately (11.2.35 to 11.2.43) . nAdha Bindhu upanishad also covers these speeches .

 

The Rg Veda Mantram states these truths : ChatvAri Vaak ( Four kinds are speeches); guhaa threeNi ( three of the four are concealed); tureeyam vaacham manushyA vadhanti ( the fourth kind is the physical sound ( Vaak) that is produced by the anatomy and physiology of the vocal tract including the larynx , tongue , vocal chord ,teeth and the neuro-anatomical appratus of heard speech.

 

Modern Neuroanatomy & Speech :

 

This branch of science has laboriously established the neural basis of speech and has localized it the Broca's and Wernicke's cortical areas . Neuro-anatomy has further established that during the every second of speech , the humans consciously use 225 distinct muscle actions ( motor area activities in the cortex). This is a prodigious act . This is still about the fourth kind of speech (Vaikhari speech) and if this "crude " speech involves such complexity , one can see how much more subtelety is involved in the other higher levels of Vaak .From a level beyond the perception of senses( paraa) , it moves up to the consciousness involving color and form and then on to the stage of thought and association and finally to the engagement of the motor cortex( physical muscle activation in a synchronized manner) to hear the meaningful sound with the right kind of emotions .Vedic recitation with precise svarams over extended periods is another of the complex attainment of divine speech . By the way , it takes 35 hours to complete the full recitation of Yajur Vedham.

 

The cortical pathway consisting of the four nodes in the brain has been identified by Neuroanatomists ; also the regulatory gene (Fox P2) that works on the basal ganglia and other subcortical structures that play a role in the neural circuits that regulate speech motor control and human cognition have been mapped out now. Producing , comprehending human speech and language development, speech pathologies link "poor wiring" in the neural circuits connecting the four nodes . These are hot areas of Research in Neuro sciences.

 

The greatness of Veda Mantrams that intutively identified the FOUR levels of speeches have to be appreicated as the mighty triumph of our Vedic traditions and AchArya Paramparai starting from Sriman NaarAyaNa and

all the way to our current AchAryas , who protect so painstakingly the Vedic traditions and bring us close to the sacred feet of Veda Purushan and intercede for us to accept our SaraNAgathy .
