Guest guest
NOTE: Readers having difficulty in reading the text may need to change their encoding to UTF-8. ------------------ TIRUVIRUTTAM And THE AUSPICIOUS QUALITIES OF THE LORD (9) ----- 41. The Lord has Garuda as His vehicle for rushing to protect His devotees who are in trouble. “Ongu asurar ponRum vakai puLLai oorvAn ” (The Lord travels on Garuda bird to destroy the demons, if they rise up with all their strength.) 42. For the protection of the BhAgavatas, if Garuda is not available, the Lord will consider His legs alone are enough; in case the legs are also not there, His eyes will be suffice for the job. “maNNum viNNum enkARku aLavinmai kANmin embAan otthu, orungE maRintu kidantalarnta menkAl kamalattadam pOl polintana empirAn tadam kaNkaLE.” (The broad eyes of the Lord appeared as though saying, “See, even the broad earth and SrIvaikuNtam together are not a match to the space of my feet!” And they bloomed elegantly like a wide pond full of blossomed lotuses with slender stacks, bent on one side.) [The idea conveyed by this description of the Lord’s eyes, by the Lady-love, is that those eyes can achieve even the impossible. The entire universe combined with the bigger parama-padam look tiny, compared to his broad eyes.] 43. His elegant complexion, though far more than theirs (the worlds’), is beyond our comprehension. “vaNNam kariyatOr mAlvarai pOnRu …. …….yavarkkum eNNumidttatuvO empirAn ezhil niRamE.” (Like a mighty black mountain, can any one comprehend my Lord’s beautiful complexion?) 44. His complexion and the form might be known a little, but His excellence cannot be comprehended at all. “niRamuyar kOlamum pErum uruvum ivaiyivaiyenRu aRamuyal j~nAnac chamayikaL pEcilum, angangellAm uRvuyar j~nAnac chudar viLakkAi ninRtanRi onRum peRamuyanRAr illaiyAl, empirAn perumaiyaiyE.” (Those Vedic traditionalists who obtained their knowledge through righteous means, may be able to describe, in a small way, the tinge of His body, the unique embellishment, His name and form. All these descriptions may match a little here and there; but, even they might acquire the highest knowledge. But none is there who has made an attempt so far to measure His elegance, which has no parallel.) 45. Even if the Lord blesses one devote, the benefit will, however, cover all his generations to come. “perunkEzhalAr tamperumkaN malarp puNdarIkam nammEl orunkE piRazhavaittAr ivvakAlam, oruvar nampOl varungEzhpavar uLarE? tollai vAzhiyam choozh-piRappu marunkE varap-peRumE? Chollu vAzhi, mada nenchamE!” (Oh, the innocent mind! This time, it will not be easy to save this world, for that mighty Lord VarAha! He has turned His big lotus-like eyes on me. Is there any one else like me? I have lived very long with Him. Can the misery of rebirths ever come near me? Speak!)
