SRI VAISHNAVA RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY - A Commemoration Volume of

" Maaca-Svami " Gadadharacharya (Hindi-Sanskrit-English): Ram-priya Sarma -

Editor; Quarters No. 7, T.N.B College, Bhagalpur, Bihar-812007. Pub. by

Sanjay Kumar, Jagdishpur, Nawbatpur, Patna. Rs. 251.

This volume commemorates the invaluable services to the community of a

unique Sannyasi still living with us at the age of 121 years in Bihar. This

great benefactor belonging to Sri Vaishnava Ahobila Math tradition deserves

to be better known. Swami Gadadharacharya, born in 1883 to ordinary

middle-class parents displayed his religious bent from an early age and was

initiated into Vaishnavism by Janardanacharya, a preceptor of the Ahobila

Math at Benares. At his Guru's behest he went on a tour of great Vaishnava

religious centres all over India. From 1942 he took to performing Yajnas

with the cooperation of people who were impressed by his asceticism, dynamic

personality and kind speech giving the healing touch to the diseased and the

distressed. He has performed about 150 sacrifices and with the excess

resources left he has founded many schools, colleges and Patasalas in Bihar.

He has also held Srivaishnava conferences. Most importantly he has built

three big temples in South Indian style in important places and continues

his missionary work. The wasteland-plain at Bihta in which he dwelt on a

" machan " (raised platform) gave him the popular name of " Maca-swami " and the

wasteland got converted into a populous settlement.

The first part of this volume details his life and services, the second and

third parts contain articles in Sanskrit, Hindi and English on Srivaishnava

religion and philosophy, all of which displaying expert knowledge and

expository lucidity.

One hopes a companion publication on the Swami's talks and convictions that

guided his long life of unparalleled benevolence will also be brought out
