Dear Swamy Desika BhakthAs:

 

In my earlier note , I had indicated that Thiruppukkuzhi

Swamy's 150th birthday will be celebrated on Nov 13

at Kaanchi at His Aasramam. Please correct it to read

as the 180th ( Third Shasthiyabdha Poorthi) birthday.

He was born in the SubhAnu year (1823 C.E) at Thirupputkkuzhi.

He belonged to the Sri Saila Vamsam ., the vamsam of

Periya Thirumalai Nambi , the uncle of AchArya RaamAnujA .

 

His Thirunakshathram is Iyppasi AaslEsham ( Adhi Seshan's

Thirunakshathram) and he is also considered as the apara avathAram

of Swamy Desikan.

 

As a child already , SrI Krishnan ( later known as SrI KrishNa

TaatArya MahA Desikan ) was deeply involved in enjoying

the Sri VaradarAja GuNAmrutham .He learnt very quickly

Ubhaya VedAntham , SaamAnya Saasthrams , Tarkam ,

MeemAmsai, VyAkaraNam , Sangeetham, yOgam , Silpam ,

Manthram and JyOthisham. He was an yEkachandhAgrAhi

and showed great scholarship and pravachana sakthi quite

early like Swamy Desikan.

 

Munithraya AchArya Paramparai

Thirukkudanthai Desikan is the progenitor of the Munithraya

SampradhAyam. He was born 300 plus years ago at RaayampEttai

and was a great devotee of Thirukkudanthi AarAvamudhan. In His

lineage appeared VaRRal Swamy ( HH SrinivAsa MahA Desikan

of Thirukkudanthai Desikan AchArya Paramparai ). ThirutthuraipooNDi

SrinivAsa RaamAnuja MahA Desikan entrusted Thirupputkkuzhi

KrishNamAchAryar to the care of VaRRal Swamy due to His asakthi .

VaRRal Swamy was known for His Jn~Ana-anushtAna-VairAgyam

and taught the precocious young student from Thiruppukkuzhi ,

who grasped all that was taught to him so fast that the AchAryan

gave him the title of " Vidhvan MaNi " to the precious Sishyan.

SrI BhAshyam and other grantha KaalakshEpams were thus

completed under HH VaRRal Swamy .

 

Many students flocked to Thirupukkuzhi Swamy even at an early

age to perform KaalakshEpams. A renowned VidhvAn belonging to

Mysore Raaja sabhA ( RaamA Saasthri) sent some of his sishyAs to

Kaanchi to debate the VisishtAdhvaithins there. Thiruppukkuzhi

Swamy was chosen to represent the Kaanchi scholars to debate

with the sishyAs of RaamA Saasthry. The parties met at the Hundred

pillar MaNtapam of Lord VaradarAjA's temple and the top sishyAs of

RaamA Saasthry were soundly defeated by Thiruppukkuzhi(TPK) Swamy .

The swiftness of the responses of TPK Swamy and His reflexes to anticipate

the subsequent questions destroyed the power of the opponents and

they accepted defeat and returned to Mysore.

 

TPK Swamy continued with additional Grantha KaalakshEpams with

his AchAryan and was initiated into Tamizh Prabhandhams , Desika

Prabahndhams and PiLLai AndhAthi by TirucchErai NadAthUr Swamy

following the niyamanam of his AchAryan.

 

Meanwhile , the unhappy RaamA Saasthry wanted to defeat TPK Swamy

in debate and invited him to dispute the Siva Para arTam for NaarAyaNa

nAmam. TPK Swamy prostrated before his AchAryan , took latter's

benedictions and went to meet RaamA Saasthry. TPK Swamy composed two

protest granthams against RaamA Saasthry's challenge ; latter realized that

he could not ever defeat TPK SWamy and conceded defeat. HH VaRRal

Swamy was very pleased with his Sishyan's performance in the vidvath

Sathas and asked another of his Sishyan ( ThodUr GovindAchari)

to compose a Taniyan for TPK Swamy and deflected the new sishyAs

that came to him for KaalakshEpam to TPK SWamy. This prodigy

sihsya of SrI VaRRal Swamy iniitated many sishyAs into the intricacies

of VisishtAdhvatham and composed many new granthams.

 

TPK Swamy was commanded by Lord VaradarAjan now to accept

the responsibilities for nirvAham of His Koil . TPK Swamy accepted

the Lord's command and recieved his AchAryA's benediction.His administrative

skills were on a par with his scholarship . The uthsavams and AarAdhanams

were conducted with total accord with SampradhAyam of PoorvAchAryAs like

AchArya RaamAnuja and Swamy Desikan .

 

During TPK Swamy's dream , Lord VaradarAja appeared and instructed

his Koil nirvAhar to resume the maryAdhais for ThUppul Desikan's archai

which had stopped for number of years. Because it was Bhagavan-niyamanam ,

TPK Swamy easily took control of ThUppul Swamy Desikan Sannidhi and

resumed the activities relating to worship rightaway. He conducted after a long

interruption the ten day uthsavam for Swamy Desikan and on the day of

Swamy Desikan's avathAram ( PurattAsi SravaNam) arranged for

the elaborate MangaLAsAsanam of Lord VaradarAja at His aasthAnam

by Swamy Desikan.

 

The Desika SrI Sookthi PaarAyaNams at the different sannidhis in and around

the aasthAnams of the Dhivya Dampathis were organized . Krama maryAdhais

at all the sannidhis and the special MaryAdhai at the Garbha Graham of

Lord VaradarAja for Swamy Desikan was established by TPK Swamy.

The BhakthAs of Swamy Desika follow this sampradhAyam even today

on PurattAsi SravaNam day.

 

Visits to ThUppul Swamy Desikan Sannidhi by Lord VaradarAja on specail

BrahmOthsavam days and VisEsha Uthsavam days were also initiated by

TPK Swamy . He established the tradition of SaThAri MaryAdhais

for Swamy Desikan's archai at Lord VaradrAjan Temple , Sri Lakshmi

KumAra Desikan and his dharma pathni AmmangAr prior to every

veethi PuRappAdu by Lord VaradarAja .

 

Thus TPK Swamy spread the darsanam of Kula MaNi Swamy Desikan

in many ways , performed MangaLAsAsanam for Lord VaradarAjan

every day , blessed SishyAs with KaalakshEpam from his house at

the RangarAja Veedhi . This house will be the venue of the planned

180th birthday celebrations of this MahA Desikan , who devoted

His life to the Kaimkaryams for Swamy Desikan and His

AarAdhana Moorthy , Lord VaradarAjan of Kaanchipuram.

Glorious indeed are the sishya Paramparais of Thiruppukkuzhi

KrishNa TaatArya MahA Desikan : Sri GopAla TaatArya MahA

Desikan ( VillimapAkkam Swamy) , TaNDri SrinivAasa MahA Desikan

( PattappA Swamy), Thiruppukkuzhi Narasimha Taata Desikan ,

Raayadurgam SrI KumAra Taata Desikan ( Sellam Swamy).

These great sishyAs who performed Prapatthi under the sacred feet of

TPK Swamy were great Scholars, anushtAthAs and VairAgyasAlis ,

who were deeply involved with kaimkaryams at the Lord's temple.

Sellam Swamy was revered as ManthraPushpam Swamy because

of the affection with which he performed this sacred rite in front of

the Lord.

 

Sishya Paramaparai of Thiruppukkuzhi Swamy

Sri Ayyaatthu Swamy ( SrI Ayyaa KrishNa TaatArya MahA Desikan) was

one of the sihyAs of SrI VilliampAkkam Swamy. His PraachAryan was

then TPK Swamy. He was known for his PradhakshiNa-PraNAms at

the different sannidhis of PerumAL Koil according to the tradition

established by the PoorvAchAryAs. He was one of the great exponents of

Swamy Desikan's SrImad Rahasya Thraya Saaram.He blessed us with

commentaries on Adaikkala Patthu, SrI VaradarAja PanchAsath and

Paramatha Bhangam.

 

ThAyAr Sannidhi VaradachAriyAr an dDEvarAja PerumAL Sannidhi

Archakar Raajam Bhattar had theri prapatthis under VilliamvAkkam Swamy and

were wel known experts in SaasthrAs and Paancha Raathra Aagamam

respectively.

 

There were so many MahAns that have direct and indirect links to
