The Lord went to Mahabali as a dwarf, Vamana, because He wanted to destroy the pride of Mahabali, and shower His grace on him by making him a great devotee. Mahabali was enchanted by the attractive form of Vamana and wanted to give him everything he asked. But he was put to shame by the request of Vamana since He wanted only three steps of earth. The shame of Mahabali that the brahmachari asked such a meager gift from him who had all the fortune in the world later gave way to a greater shame that he was not able to give even that which was asked. But Mahabali became renowned because of the act of Vamana who grew into Thrivikrama and by placing His foot on the head of Mahabali, blessed him. So Desika says that the army of fame of Mahabali was spread to the whole universe by the foot of the Lord which went everywhere like the foremost leader of the army. It also served as the flagstaff by being raised and advancing beyond the heavenly realms which tore the cosmic shell and the waters beyond flowed down and became the Ganges. The floods of Ganges flowing from the foot of the Lord filled all the eight directions and it is described by Desika as the white flag that was fluttering in all directions. thraivikramo vikramaH- the foot step of the Thrivikrama ( vikrama means step) avathu- may protect naH –us. yaSo naaseeraDhateebhataH- which was like the soldier in front of the army of the fame. yasaH =fame. naaseera=advancing , going in front.
