Dear All :

 

A Member asked a question on the significance from

a SamskArA point of view various stages of one's life:

Abdhapoorthy/Aayush Homam , Shasti abdha Poorty ,

SathamAna Uthsavam et al.

 

Here is an article I wrote on the 80th birth day (SathamAna Uthsavam) .

Aayush homam is a Kaamya Karma and it is not a nithya Karama

like SandhyA vandhanam or one of the 40 Hindu samskArams like

Garbha dhAnam , NaamakaraNam , aana PrAsanam , Chowlam , Upanayanam ,

VivAham etc . Aayush Homam is a Kaamya karmam , where the parents do

a Homam to pray for the child's long life . It is also a social occasion to mark

an improtant mile stone in its life .

 

Ditto for 60th , 80th and 100th birthday , these are important stages in one's

life .

60th birth day marks the one turn of the 60 year long hindu cycle of years.

AchArya RaamAnuja lived 120 years and saw two turns of the HIndu calendar

of 60 years starting from Prabhava samvathsaram and ending in Akshaya year .

 

8oth birth day is for celebrating the seeing of 1000 Full Moons .

100th birth day is to celebrate Veda prAyam of 100 that we pray for

in our midday sandhyA ( MadhyAhnikam) .

 

Again , there is an important social side to celebrate these mile stones

with the Family as a unit and review major accomplishments in conducting

a Dharmic way of life .

 

On these days , Veda PaarAyaNam , Dhivya prabhandha

PaarAyaNam , Srimath RaamaayaNa PaarayaNam are doen for

4 days , Udhaka Saanthi mantrams are recited by Vedic pundits and

the consecrated water is poured on the couple or the celebrant .

New Vasthrams are worn , Visit to AchAryan , Temple andTadhiyArAdhanam for

the ghOshti are the rest of the items for the milestone day .
