Swamy Deshikan Thiruvadigale Sharanam !!!

Dear Bhagavathas,

Sriman Shathakopa thathacharya swamy of Kanchipuram, who is the trustee of

Thooppul Vedantha Desikar Charitable Trust has forwarded the following

appeal to the internet fraternity requesting participation in the

Nityaradhana kainkaryam for Thuppul Deshikan and Marakathavalli Nayika

sametha Sri Deepaprakasha Perumal at the temple in Thuppul Kanchipuram. (All

translation errors are adiyen's).

- From Sriman Shathakopa thathacharya -

Swamy Deshikan, in the Shastriya Niyamanadhikaram of his Srimath

Rahasyatrayasaram, elucidates that kainkaryams are twofold - Ajna kaikaryam

and Anujna kainkaryam. Ajna kainkaryams are ordained duties that must be

performed without fail and with no desire for the fruits thereof. Anujna

kainkaryam may be performed seeking a specific fruit or goal. " AjnAnujnA

vibhAgena dvidhAshAstrIyapaddhati: " is the kaarikai elucidated by Swamy that

states that even Anujna kainkaryam need to be performed as per the

prescribed tenets and shastraic doctrines. It should not be performed as per

one's own whims and fancies. " anujnA pravruttEpi ... duratyaya: " These

tenets should not be transgressed. It is for this reason that everybody

cannot perform Thiruvaradhanam at temples. This is therefore done by the

archakars who are invested with the rights to perform such kainkaryams. It

is by supporting them that we should chose to perform these kanikaryams.

Nityaradhanam is deemed as Ajna kainkaryam. The same may also be performed

as Anujna kainkaryam. " yAvajjIvamagnihotram juhoti " - One performs the

Agnihotram everyday as per the doctrines of the imperial Vedas. " agnihotram

juhuyAt svargakAma: " - Out of desire for attaining heaven, one performs the

agnihotram sacrifice. For such an aspirant, there arises now a question as

to whether Agnihotram need to be performed once or twice a day. If

Nityakarmas and Kamyakarmas are performed together in one onservance and

though Kamyakarma has been performed seeking a fruit, the combined

observance also implies the completion of Nityakarmam. " kAmyAnnityasiddhi: "

- Nityakarma will also attain fruition though performed along with

Kamyakarma. But with the observance of Nityakarma alone, one is not

guaranteed the attainment of heaven or other fruits. These may be achieved

only by means of performing a specific kamya karmam. The performer of

Nityakarmam is not an adhikari (authority) to receive the fruits of its

observance. Fruits of observance therefore, are not attained by performers

of Nityakarmam and may be obtained only by performing a specific kainkaryam

with phala sankalpam.

In a similar way, Nityaradhanam at the temples is an Ajna kaikaryam. Some

devotees chose to support this kainkaryam seeking opulence of wealth and

prosperity and choose the kainkaryams to be performed on days of their

marriage or star etc. Some do it in the name of brahmana bhojanam or

tadeeyaaradhanam to acquire some merit for their deeds. If these noble souls

choose to participate in this Nityaradhana kainkaryam, then as part of this

Aradhanam, food is offered to the Lord first as nivedanam. It is then

distributed as annadanam to the archakars and devotees who are bhagavathas.

Thus it accomplishes brahmana bhojanam and tadIyArAdhanam. It is not

necessary to prepare separate culinaries for brahmana bhojanam and

tadIyArAdhanam. Though devotees may be performing this kainkaryam seeking

fruits, in this case, it also amounts to the fulfillment of nityakarmam.

Devotees may participate in this kainkaryam in the name of nityaradhanam,

tadIyArAdhanam or seeking specific fruits for them. But the end result is

the smooth conduct of the Nityaradhanam of Swamy Deshikan and Marakathavalli

Nayika sametha Deepaprakasha Perumal.

To be contd ...
