Dear Sri BalAji Narasimhan :

Your question is an excellent one : Why is there only one

PaadhukA that is worn by MalOlan , the AarAdhanA Moorthy of

Ahobila Matam Jeeyars ? How come the other Paadhukai is

missing in His dhivya MangaLa Vigraham ?

Here is the legendary answer for your question below :

[srivenugopala] Adivan Sadagopan's sole Paduka

The answer is :

It all goes back to a BahudhAnya ( BaudhA + anya ) samvathsaram

( 1398 C.E) , PurattAsi Month , Sukla Paksha Panchami dinam , a Thursday ,

when a Young man of 20 years age by the name , KidAmbi SrinivAsan

stood on the Upper Ahobilam and was about to start to perform his

MangaLAsAsanam of Nava Narasimhars . He had just taken his bath in

BhavanAsini river , performed his nithya karmAnushtAnams . As this

young scholar walked towards the Sannidhis , an elderly SanyAsi

appeared before Kidambi SrinivAsar . Our young visitor prostrated before

the elderly SanyAsi and shared with Him the dream that had brought him

to Ahobila KshEthram . The SanyAsi smiled and acknowledged that it was

He who had invited the young scholar from Melkote to Ahobilam

and asked the young scholar to accept SanyAsAsramam . The elder

Yathi Saarvabhoumar blessed the younger scholar with His own saffron

robes ( KaashAya Vasthram) and performed PrEksha Manthra UpadEsam

to initiate him in to the fourth aasramam . The elder Yathi Saarvabhoumar

went into AchArya RaamAnuja Sannidhi inside the temple of Upper Ahobilam

and took the ThridhaNDam resting on the hands of BhAshyakArar

and blessed KidAmbi SrinivAsar with it . The elderly SanyAsi , who was

none other than BhagavAn Narasimhan gave the name of SaThakOpa

Jeeyar to the young SanyAsi .

Lord NarasimhA commanded the new Jeeyar to perform AarAdhanam

for Lord Narasimhan and travel from village to village with Lord Narasimhan

to bless aasrithAL's with SamAsrayaNams and BharanyAsams and to protect

them .

Lord Narasimha appearing as the elder SanyAsi gave His own sankha chakrams

to

the newly initiated SanyAsi ( SrI SaThakOpa Jeeyar) for performing

SamAsrayaNams during his assigned misison .

The young SanyAsi had one doubt now . He asked the Lord as to which of

the Nava Narasimhan he should perform AarAdhanam . The elder SanyAsi

replied : " Close your eyes and meditate on the nava NarasimhAs . One of

them will bless You . I am the One who appeared in Your dream and invited

you here . We have blessed You with SanyAsa Aasramam " and disappeared

right in front of the astounded young sanyAsi .

Sri SaThakOpa Jeeyar performed aarAdhanam for all the nava NarasimhAs

following the command of His AchAryan , closed his eyes thereafter and

held his hands in a supplicatory mode and said " Praseedha " (Bless me) .

Immediately ,

the ArchA Moorthy of Lord Narasimhan embracing MahA Lakshmi seated on

His left side and holding abhaya Mudhrai on His right hand and

Sankha -Chakrams

on His other two (upper) hands jumped in to the cupped hands of SrI

SaThakOpa

Jeeyar . Sri Lakshmi Nrusimhan (MalOlan) came in such a hurry that He had

time

to get into only one of His PaadhukAs. He left the other Paadhukai in His

aasthAnam .

MalOlan was so eager to start on His sanchArams with Sri SaThakOpa Jeeyar

that He did not even notice that He had only one PaadhukA . He did not go

back to

recover His other PaadhukA. He has returned to His aasthAnam many times

at Upper Ahobilam to unite with His Moola BhEram with the succesors of

Sri Adhi VaNN SathakOpa Jeeyar but did not want to recover HIs other

Paahduka and thereby erase the incident assoicated with His historic rush

to bless His hand-picked Jeeyar on that BhaudhAnya-PurattAsi-Sukla Paksha

Panchami dinam some 606 years ago . At that historic time ,Garudan at

His Thiruvadi held on to the Lord ; AdhisEshan above His head held on .

MahA Lakshmi clasped Her lord tightly , when He was moving like

chandamArutham .One of the Paadhukais however could not match

the speed of the Lord . The Paadhukai that took the first step to transport

the Lord ( on the Right foot) held on . That on the Left foot got left

behind.

That is why , we see Only One Paadhukai on the Paadha YugaLam of

MalOlan's archA Moorthy that receieves AarAdhanam daily from

the Azhagiya Singars . It is the comemoration of a historic event .

Srimath Azhagiya Singar ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam ,

Oppiliappan Koil VaradAchAri Sadagopan
