Aham – I bhavishyaami- will become aaSithaa- fed dheerghasya kaalasya- after a long time. Idham –this mahath Satthvam- large animal chirasya –after long time aagatham- has come me vaSam- within my grasp. 186. ithi sanchinthya manasaa Chaayaam asya samaakshipath Chaayaayaam grhyamaaNaayaam chinthayaamaasa vaanaraH With this thought in mind she pulled the shadow of him and Hanuman thought (thus) on his shadow being pulled ithi sanchinthya- thinking thus manasaa- in mind sammakshipath- pulled- ( from kship with aa meaningto pull and sam added for emphasis.) asya Chaayaam- his shadow vaanaraH – Hanuman chinthayaamaasa- thought Chaayayaam – on his shadow graahyamaaNaayaam- being pulled 187.samaakshiptho asmi sahasaa pangookrthaparaakramaH prathilomena vaathena mahaanouH iva sagare I am being pulled suddenly my strenth beibg crippled like a ship by the opposing wind in the sea. asmi- I am being samaakshipthaH- pulled sahasaa- suddenly pangookrthaparaakramaH- strength beibg crippled mahaanouH iva- like a ship saagare- on the sea vaathena- wind prathilomena- opposing to the motion 188. thiryag oorDhvam aDhaSchaiva veekshmaaNaH thathaH kapiH dhadharSa sa mahath satthvam utThitham laVaNaambhasi Then Hanuman seeing sideways, up and down saw the immense being risen up on the ocean. thathaH- then kapiH – Hnauman veekshamaaNaH- seeing thiryag – side ways oorDhvam- up aDhaH chaiva- and also down sa dhadharSa- he saw mahath satthvam- great being utThitham- rising up lavaNambhasi-on the sea.(kavaNa – salt, ambhas –water) 189. thath dhrshtvaa chinthayaamaasa maaruthiH vivrthaananam kapiraajena kaThitham satthvam adhbhutha dharSanam Hanuman, seeing the expanded mouth, thought that it is the surprising being told by Sugreeva, maruthiH- Hanuman thath dhrshtvaa- seeing that vivrtha ananam- expanded mouth (of Simhika) chinthayaamaasa- thought (that) satthvam- the being adhbhutha dharSanam- wonderful to look at kaThitham- (is that) told kapirajena- by Sugreeva 190. Chaayagraahi mahaaveeryam thath idham na samSayaH sa thaam budDhvaa arTha thatthvena simhikaam mathimaan kapiH, vyavarDhatha mahaakaayaH praavrsheeva valaahakaH the Chaayagraahi, of great power without any doubt. Knowing her rigtly as Simhika the wise Hanuman grew his great body in size like the cloud in rainy season. idham – this Chaayaagraahi-is the one who graspa the shadow mahaaveeryam- being of great power asamSayam – without any doubt. saH mathimaan kapiH- the wise monkey thaam simhikaam budDhvaa- knowing her to be Simhikaa arTha thathvaena-as it is,correctly vyaavarDhatha- grew up into mahaakaayaH- a great form valaahakaH iva- like a cloud praavrshi- in rainy season 191 thasya saa kaayam udhveekshya varDhamaanam mahaakapeH vakthram prasaarayaamaasa paathaalaantharasannibham ghanaraajeeva garjanthee vaanaram samabhidhravath Seeing the body of that great monkey growing in size, she expanded her mouth till the nether regions. She ran after Hanuman roarong like thunder. saa – that Simhika udhveekshya- seeing kaayam -the body mahaakapeH- of the great monkey varDhamaanam- growing in size prasaarayaamaasa- spread vakthram – her mouth paathaalaanthara sannibham- extended till the nether regions garjanthee- roaring ghanaraajeeva- like thunder from the clouds samabhoidhravath – ran towards vaanara- Hanuman 192. sa dhadharSa thathaH thasyaaH vivrtham sumahan mukham kaayamaathram cha meDhaavee marmaaNi cha mahaakapiH That Hanuman saw then her very large mouth opened as big as his body and her vital organs. sa mahakapiH- that Hanuman, the great monkey, meDhaavee- who is wise dhadharSa- saw thathaH-then(after that) thasyaaH-her sumhaan mukham—very large mouth vivrtham-opened kaayamaathram- as big as his body (she opened to the size of his body) marmaaNi cha- her vital organs. 193.sa thasyaaH vivrthe vakthre vajrasamhananaH kapiH samkshipya muhuH aathmaanam nipapaaatha mahaabalaH Hanuman with great might, fell into her enlarged mouth lke the onslaught of thunderbolt, contracting his body again. saH- he mahaabalaH- of great might nipapaatha- fell thasyaaH vakthre- into her mouth vajra samhananaH- as a thunf derbolt samkshipya- contracting athmaanam- himself muhuH- again 194.aasye thasyaaH nimajjantham dhadhrSuH sidDhachaaraNaaH grsyamaanam yaThaa chandhram poorNam parvaNi raahuNaa The siddhas and charanas saw him plunging into her mouth as the full moon being caught by Rahu. sidDhachaaraNaaH- the sidDhas and charanas dhadhrSuH- saw nimajjantham – him plunging into thasyaaH aasye-into her mouth ( the words vakthram, mukham aasyam etc. mean both face and mouth as per the contexr) yaThaa –as chandram- moon grasyamaaNam –is grasped raahuNaa- by Rahu parvaNi poorNam- full at the end of parva (bright fortnight) 195.thathaH thasyaaH nakhaiH theekshNiaH marmaaNi uthkrthya vaanaraH uthpapaatha aTha vegena manassampaathavikramaH Then tearing off her vital organs by sharp nails, rose up afterwards with speed , being as powerful as the mind. thathaH-then uthkrthya- tearing off theekshNaiH nakhaiH- with sharp nails thasyaaH marmaaNi- her vital organs vaanarah- Hanuman uthpapaatha- rose up aTha- afterwards vegena with speed manassampaathavikramaH- as powerful as the mind 196.thaam thu dhrshtyaa cha Dhrthyaa cha dhaakshiNyaena nipaatthya cha sa kapipravaro vegaath vavrDhe punaH aathmavaan killing her with vision courage and dexterity, the best among monkeys grew again fast, being the master of himself thaam nipaathya- felling her dhrshtyaa- with vision Dhrthyaa cha- and courage dhaakshiNyena cha- and dexterity sa kapivaraH- that Hanuman vavrDhe – grew punaH – again vegaath- with speed aathmavaan – being the master of himeslef. 197..hrthahrth saa hanumathaa papaatha lavaNaambhasi svayambhvaa iva hanumaan srshtaH thasyaaH nipaathane She fell into the ocean having her heart torn by Hanuman. It was as if Hanuman was created by brahma to kill her. Saa-she papaatha- fell lavaNaambhasi- into the ocean hrthahrth- heart torn off hanumathaa- by Hanuman iva –as if hanumaan-Hanuman srshtaH- was created svayambhuvaa- by Brahma thasyaaH nipaathane- for her fall (destruction) 198.thaam hathaam vaanareNa aaSu pathithaam veekshya simhikaam bhoothaani aakaasachaareeNi tham oochuH plavagotthamam Seeing her falling soon killed by Hanuman, the beings who move in the sky said to the best of monkeys. Veekshya thaam- seeing her pathithaam- falling aaSu- soon hathaam – killed vaanarena- by Hanuman bhothaani- the beings aakaasachaareeNi- who move in the sky oochuH- said tham plavagotthamam- to the best of monkeys, Hanuman 199.bheemam adhya krtham karma mahath satthvam thvayaa hatham saaDhaya arTham abhipretham arishtam plavathaam vara A mighty deed has been done by you now and a big being has been killed by you. Accomplish the task wished by you well, oh best of monkeys. bheemam karma – a mighty deed krtham- done adhya – now mahath satthvam – a powerful being hatham –is killed thvayaa- by you saaDhaya-accomplish arTham- the goal abhipretham- intended arishtam- without imperiment plavathaam vara- oh the best of monkeys. 200. yasya thu ethaani chathvaari vaanarendhra yaThaa thava DhrthiH dhrshtih mathiH dhaakshyam sa karmasu na seedhathi The One in whom these four qualities are found as in you, the king of monkeys, courage, a good vision, wisdom and skill , he will not fail in his task. Yasya thu- in whom indeed are ethaani chathvaari- these four DhrthiH- courage, dhrshtiH- vision meening proper perception mathiH- wisdom dhaakshyam- dexterity yaThaa –as thava- in you vaanerendra- Oh king of monkeys, saH – he na seedhathi- does not fail, Seedh means to sink down (into despair) karmasu- in all works 201.sa thaiH sampoojithaH poojyaiH prathipannaprayojanaH jagaama aakaasam aaviSya pannagaasanavath kapiH Thus honoured by them who were honourable , and knowing the importance of his work, entered the sky and went along like Garuda. saH kapiH - that Hanuman prathipanna prayojanaH- aware of the result of the task at hand sampoojithaH- honoured thaiH poojyaiH- by them who are honourable aaviSya- entering aakaaSam- the sky jagaama- went pannagaaSanavath- like Garuda. ( pannaga means serpent and aSana means one who eats them, Garuda.) 202. praapthabhooyishTapaarasthu sarvathaH prathi lokayan yojanaanaam Sathasyaanthe vanaraajim dhadharSa saH Reaching other shore almost, looking around he saw the series of forests at the end of the hundred yojanas. praapthabhooyishtapaaraH- reaching the other side of the ocean almost, bhooyishta has the meaning `almost' besides `abundant.' sarvathaH prathi lokayan- looking all around , sarvathaH means everywhere and prathi is towards. Yojanaanaam Sathasya anthe- at the end of the hundred yojanas, that is when he has covered 100 yojanas, dhdharSa- saw vanaraajim- seires of forests. The particle `ha' is used often by valmiki to denote wonder. 203.dhadharsa cha pathanneva viviDhadhrumabhooshitham dhveepam SaakhaamrgasreshTaH malayopavanaani cha The best among monkeys saw while he was descending, the island adorned with various kinds of trees and forests in the region of Malayaparvata. SaakhaamrgaSreshtaH – the greatest of monkeys Hanuman dhadharSa- saw pathanneva- while descending, dheepam- the island viviDhadhrumabhooshitham- adorned with various kinds of trees malaya upavanaani cha –and forests of the Malaya mountain.( This is different the malaya mountain in south India. 204.saagaram saagaraanoopam saagaraanoopajaan dhrumaan saagarasya cha pathneenaam mukhaanyapi vilokayan Seeing the sea, the bay and the trees on the bay and the rivers , the wives of the ocean, Vilokayan- seeing saagaram-the sea saagaraanoopam-the bay ( anoopa means watery place) dhrumaan- trees saagaraanoopajaan – that have grown at the bay mukhaani cha- and the faces pathneenaam- the wives of saagarasya- the sea, That is the rivers joining into the sea. 205.sa mahaamegha sankaasam sameekshya aathmaanam aathmavaan nirunDhantham iva aakaasam chakaara mathimaan mathim also seeing himself as a great cloud as though obstructing the sky,the wise and self controlled Hanuman thought thus. Sameekshya – seeing aathmaanam- himself mahaameghasankaasam- like a great cloud nirundhantham iva- as though obstructing aakaaSam- the sky aathmavaan- the self controlled mathimaan – and the wise Hanuman chakaara mathim- thought thus chakaara means `did ` mathim is thought. 206. kaayavrdDhim pravegam cha mama dhrshtvaa eva raakshasaaH mayi kouthoohalam kuryuH ithi mene mahaakapiH Seeing my body grown and the speed the rakshasas will become curious, thought the great monkey. mahaakapaiH- Hanuman, the great monkey mene- thought ithi- thus: dhrshtvaa- seeing kaayapravrdDhim- the enlarged body mama- of me pravegam cha- and the speed raakshasaaH- the rakshasas kuthoohalam kuryuH- will become curious. 207.thathaH Sareeram samkshipya than mahenDhra sannibham punaH prakrthim aapedhe veethamoha iva aathmaavaan Then contracting his body which was like the mahendhra mountain, he regained his original form as the one who has realized his self. becoming devoid of delusion. thathaH- then samkshipya- contracting thath Sareeram- that body mahendhrasannibham- like the mahendhramountain aapedhe – obtained prakrthim- natural form punah- again aathmavaan- like a realized soul veethamoha- from whom the delusion has gone. The real nature of the self is realized when the delusion giving rise to identification with the body is gone. 208. thadhroopam athi samkshipya hanoomaan prakrthou sThithaH threen kramaan iva vikramya baliveeryaharo hariH Contracting that form very much Hanuman stood in his natural state like the Lord Hari who took away the power of Bali by taking three steps. athi samkshipya- contracting very much hanumaan- Hanuman sThithaH- stood prkrthou- in natural state hariH iva- like Lord Hari baliveeryaharaH- who took away the power of Bali vikramya- tread threen kramaan- three steps 209.sa chaarunaanaaviDharoopadharee param samaasadhya samudhra theeram paraih aSakyaH prathipannaroopaH sameekshithaathmaa samavekshithaarThaH He who could take many beautiful and different forms and invincible by enemies and who knew himself well and who knew his purpose reached the other side of the ocean, assuming the original form. Sah – that Hanuman paraiH aSakyaH- invincible by enemies sameekshithaathmaa- who knew himself well samavekshitha arThaH- who knew well his purpose Chaaru naanaaviDha roopaDhaari- who could take various, beautiful forms prathipannaroopaH – assuming the original form samaaaadhya- reaching param samudhratheeram- the other side of the ocean 210. thathaH sa lambasya gireH samrdDhe vichithrakoote nipapaatha koote sakethakodDhaalakanaarikele mahaadhrikootaprathimo mahaathmaa The great Hanuman, looking like a big mountain, descended on the peak Lamba of the mountain, which was richly endowed with kethaka plants and coconut trees and the like, with many peaks. Sa mahaathmaa- the great Hanuman mahaadhrikoota prathimaH- looking like a great mountain nipapaatha- descended koote-on the peak lambasya gireH- Lamba of the mountain sakethakodDhaalaka narikele- abounding in kethaka plants and coconut trees (kethaka is r the flower called Thaazmaboo in Tamil with long yellow fragrant petals) samrdDhe- richly endowed vichithrakoote- which had many peaks nipapaatha- descended 211.thathaH thu sampraapya samudhratheeram sameekshya lankaam girirajamoorDhni kapisthu thasmin nipapaatha parvathe viDhooya roopam vyaThayan mrgadhvijaan Then Hanuman reaching the coast of the ocean, seeing Lanka on the top of the mountain descended on the mountain casting off his former form making the animals and the birds miserable thathaH- then kapiH thu- Hanuman samprraapya –reaching samudhratheeram- the coast of the sea sameekshya –seeing lankaam- Lanka girirajamoorDhani- at the head of the mountain nipapaatha- descended thasmin parvathe- on that mountain viDhaaya –casting off roopam -the former form (that is , contracting it) vyaThayan- tormenting mrgadhvijaan- animals and birds ( which became frightened of his speed) 212.sa saagaram dhaanavapannagaayutham balena vikramya mahormimaalinam nipathya theere cha mahodhaDheH thadhaa dhadharSa lankaam amaraavatheem iva Then, Hanuman, crossing the ocean full of asuras and serpents and great waves, with valour, descending on the coast of the great sea, Saw Lanka resembling Amaravathi, the capital of Devaloka. Thadhaa- then saH- Hanuman vikramya- crossing saagaram- the sea dhaanavpanaagaayutham- abounding in asuras and serpents mahormimaalinam- and with full of big waves balena- powerfully nipathya cha- and descending theere- on the coast mahodhDheH- of the great sea dhadharSa- saw lankaam- Lankaa amaraavatheem iva- like Amaravathi, capital of devaloka.
