Guest guest
Chapters9to11- Mohini avathara When the asuras were fighting those who were weak and could not fight told the others that it was not right that they should appropriate the amrtha since devas also deserved their share being their dhayadhis (cousins). Hence when the asuras saw Mohini they approached her and asked her who she was requesting her to settle the dispute and divide the amrtha equally to all including the devas. The asuras told her that they were kaSyapa dhaayaadhaaH, meaning that they were cousins being born of sage Kasyapa ..( asuras were born from Kasyapa to Dhithiand devas to Adhithi) The Lord in Mohini form laughed aloud and said `kaTham kaSyapa dhaayaadhaaH pumschalyaam mayi sangathaaH viSvaasam pandithaaH jaathu kaameneeshu na yanthi hi,' meaning , "how can the kasyapa dhaayaadhis associate with me a wanton woman? The wise never trust women , is it not so?" There is a pun in the word kaSyapa dhaayaadha, though. Kakshyam (wine) pibanthi ithi kaSyaapaH and dhaayaH means dhaaneeyam(wine) adhanthi ithi, meaning that they were not wise being drunkards as otherwise they would not have trusted her. The word pumschalyaa also can be explained other wise as it denotes the Lord Himself. pumaamsam chaalayathi ithi, one who makes the minds of all waver which means a wanton m woman , also may mean the one who makes the mind of His foes shake with His valour. Thinking that she was only teasing them the asuras repeated their request. Then Mohini told them that they have to agree to whatever she does and they accepted. Then Mohini took bath and performed rituals required before partaking something sacred and seated the asuras and devas in separate rows. Enchanting the asuras with her beauty and sweet words she divided the amrtha among the devas. The Lord did not give amrtha to the asuras because it would be like giving to the serpents as they were wicked and making them immortal will only increase the torment of the world. The asuras trusted her and did not want to displease her and kept quiet. But one of them named Svarbhanu saw what was going on and entered the row of devas disguised as one of them and ate the amrtha. He was found out by the Sun and the Moon and was pointed him out to the Lord who cut his head off with His chakrayudha and disappeared on Garuda. But since Svarbhanu ate amrtha he could not be killed and became alive in two parts Rahu and Kethu and he is supposed to grasp the Sun and the Moon periodically which event is known as grahaNa. There arose a battle between the devas and asuras as a result and seeing asuras being killed Narada stopped the fight. Sukracharya the asuraguru revived the dead asuras using sanjeevani manthra and Bali the king of asuras accepted defeat becaseu he was wise and later he did thapads and confiscate devaloka and was punished by the Lord in His vamanavathara.
