Dearest all,

Let us continue to enjoy Thirumangai AzhwAr’w

wonderful verses on Thiruvenkatamudiayaan.

kalayaami kalidhvamsam kavim lOkadhivaakaram

yaSya kObi: prakaaSaabir aavidhyam niHatham thama:

I meditate on the Poet, who is like the Sun for the

whole world, to destroy the darkness of ignorance

(a~jnAnam) with his word and who destroys the Kali

dhOsham.

Oh Most wonderful Lord! Oh alarmEl mangai maNALA!

Madhava! (Master of Sri MahALakshmi!) Oh Lord of

ThiruvEmkatam, surrounded by lotus ponds, where honey

rolls down from the mountain top to these lotus ponds!

I have committed only sins and nothing but sins- sins

after sins and more and more sins. There is no other

strength or refuge for me, now. I know NONE ELSE BUT

YOU to save me. There is none who can save me, except

You. adiyEn has surrendered to Your Feet. Please save

me and take me over to You as Your eternal servant.

AzhwAr surrenders here to the Divya Dampathi. When he

thinks of his helplessness and wishes to perform

Saranagathi [self surrender] he immediately thinks of

Sri Mahalakshmi the most merciful Mother along with

the ever ready most graceful and most compassionate

Father Sriman Narayanan. It is PiraaTTi who recommends

as the Mother does, forgiveing our past and sins. The

Father has dhaNdarathvam [punishing for the acts

committed trespassing saasthirc injunctions].

The only thing that is in between us and SrIviakunTham

is the enormous sins that we have committed. The only

prAyaScitta that is available to most of us for our

heaps of sins is prapatti. The greatness and efficacy

of Saranagathi has been taught to us by bhagawaan in

His rAma and krishNa incarnations, and also by the

great sages and AcArya-s. As the first step in seeking

SaraNagathi, we should seek the protection of our

divine Mother, pirATTi, who speaks for us and pleads

for us with bhagavAn –tadArambhe tasyAh giram

avadhAnena manasA akhila nAthasya ekAm ahishIm tAm

Sriyam prapadye (Slokam 3 of Nyasa thilakam of

Desika). In lakshmi tantra, pirATTi's words to us are:

" Surrender to Me when you perform the prAyaScitta for

your sins " .

prAyaScitta prasange tu sarva pApa samudbhave |

mAm ekAm devadevasya mahishIm saraNam Srayet ||

As our divine Mother, She takes the responsibility to

plead our case when bhagawaan is vexed with our

enormous sins. Without Her pleading our case, we have

no chance of approaching Him

It is pointed out by Poorvars that SrI rAmAnuja in his

SaraNAgati gadyam, also first seeks pirATTi's Grace,

and after obtaining Her blessing, performs prapatti at

the feet of the Lord. Thus AzhwAr follows the same

principle here seeking PiraaTTi’s grace and Sri

Srinivasan’s mercy herein.

In the PancharAtra smahitA, Maha Vishnu explains to

his senior disciple VishvaksenA, the nature and

attributes of His consort, Sri Mahalakshmi. He states

that She is the resting place of all Gurus, ruler of

all worlds, eternal and imperishable. He elaborates

further on their relationship: Just as the Universe is

pervaded by me both in essence and quality, all this

is pervaded by Her also. Therefore, She is the

disposer and ruler of all.... She is pervaded by me

and similarly, I, the Lord am also pervaded by Her.

The difference

between me and Her is that She, who is the ruler of

all is subservient to me. To Her as well as the

Universe that I am the Lord,is well known in Vedas.

In the same PancharAtra SamhitA, Sri Mahalakshmi

herself has explained Herself and Her consort, their

pervasion and rulership. Sri Vatsya Varada Guru, the

author of the illustrious work on SaranAgathi known as

Prapanna ParijAtha has elaborated on the relationship

between the divine couple as follows: That supreme

energy of Brahman, which is as is lustre to the moon,

is the Goddess Lakshmi, who is coexistent with Brahman

in all His conditions, and who is in His own nature

and is indestructible.

what a great paasuram again by AzhwAr. Let us waste no

further birth to rush to perform our saranagathi at

the lotus feet of Divya Dampathi Sri PadmavathI

SamEtha Sri Srinivasan of Thirumala...
