Dearest Srivaishnavas,

In the last PAsuram, He acts as antharAthmA was

described for all shrushti (creations) sthithi.. Now

how does the world and planets stay at where they are

without falling at all or bang against each other.. is

wondered by AzhwAr.. The entire universe is supported

by Him..

naakamEnthu mEruveRpai

naakamEnthu maNNinai,

naakamEndhu maakamaaka

maakamEndhu vaar_punal,

maakamEnthu mankultheeyor

vaayuvain^ thamainthukaaththu,

EgamEndhi ninRan^eermai,

nin_kaNEyi yanRathe. (6)

The huge tall mEru mountain that holds even the heaven

(as it appears to with its height and its lustre

reaching the heavens); the Universe held by the

AdhisEshan; the upper world (heaven) where there is

joy always [paramapadham]; the in-between anthariksha

lOkam; the river ganges; the rainy clouds which hold

huge waters; - the lustrous fire; the unparalleled

Vaayu (air); the Space- like that all the pancha

bhUthAs; - all the above are supported by You and are

protected by You not letting them fall; or bang

against each other. You are single handedly able to do

so, with your veeryam.. and it is naturally available

in You as You are the Supreme.. and none else. Thus

You are the supporter of all JIvAtmAs, PrakRuti and

KAla. It means that the svarUpa and sthiti (continual

existence with time) of all are dependent upon You.

Dhyow: sachandhaarkka nakshathram. Kham diSObhUr

mahOdhathi: vaasudEvasya veeryENa vidhruthAni

mahAthmana: - His veerya guNA- which is naturally in

Him always holds and supports the entire universe, the

stars without letting them fall or bang each other. In

IsAvAsya Upanishad also thasmin apO maadharisvA

dhadhAthi- the air, water in the space – He is there

as antharyaami. In the vyAkhyAnam Swamy Desikan

mentions that the water

here refers to water, clouds, planets, stars etc..

Thee (Fire)- it may also mean the vaisvAnarAgni;

Vaayu aindhu- pancha prANan-

In this connection, we can refer to Sri Vishnu

sahasranaamam for better understanding: [from our Sri

N Krishnamachari’s posting]

vAyu-vAhanah - He who has vAyu as His vehicle.

BhagavAn rides on and drives vAyu, the life-breath of

the world. In tiruvezhukkURRirukkai, we have -

mEdagum aim-perum bhUtamum nIyE - He controls the

pa~nca bhUta-s such as air etc.

The dharma cakram writer points out that while air is

very important for us to live, this nAma should remind

us that mahA vishNu who makes the air move is just as

important to us, and thus we should learn to meditate

on Him.

It means that bhagavAn controls the atmosphere in the

seven regions of space. It is described in detail

about these seven regions which are controlled by

seven different sons of kaSyapa and diti, because of

the powers given to them by bhagavAn. They are called

the sapta-maruta-s. Six of these regions are listed

by many of the authors. These regions are: the space

between earth and the clouds, that between the clouds

and the sun, that between the sun and the moon, the

moon and the stars, the stars and the planets, and the

planets and the sapta-r*shi manDala. It is said that

it is because of the pressure exerted by these regions

of air that the various stellar objects keep from

colliding with each other.

It may appear as if one supports the other. But Sriman

Narayanan as the in dweller supports everything and

enables them function through them. Due to His power,

veeryam, they function and the other supports (like

Space, Vaayu, etc..) are like the faces

[gOpuranthaangigaL) that are carved in pillars that

appear to hold the tower (though the pillar does not

get their support actually).

ninkaNE- It is available in You alone [not in Brahma,

Rudraa et al. ].

Namo Narayana
