Let us continue to enjoy Thirumangai AzhwAr’s Periya

Thirumozhi.

 

kalayaami kalidhvamsam kavim lOkadhivaakaram

yaSya kObi: prakaaSaabir aavidhyam niHatham thama:

 

I meditate on the Poet, who is like the Sun for the

whole world, to destroy the darkness of ignorance

(a~jnAnam) with his word and who destroys the Kali

dhOsham.

 

konREnpalluyiraik kuRikkOLonRilaamaiyinaal,

enREnumirandhaarkku inidhaagavuraitthaRiyEn,

kunREymEgamadhir kuLirmaamalaivEngkadavaa!,

anREvanNdhadainNdhEn adiyEnaiyaatkoNdaruLE. 1.9.3

 

Oh Lord, the One shows Himself so gracefully at

TirumalA, which is full of huge mountain like cool

rainy clouds! Due to no sense (for fellow beings- no

vivEkam), I have killed many lives. I have never ever

offered food to beggars, when they begged me. I have

never ever uttered sweet pleasing words at anyone.

With all those (dis)qualifications, adiyEn has come to

You to get saved by You, Lord. Please save me and

take me over to You as Your eternal servant.

 

AzhwAr in a state of repentance reminds himself and

reveals to the Lord that he transgressed the Saastric

injunction , " Na sva vruthyA kadhAchana "

 

What the AzhwAr reminds the Lord is that due to his

prArabdha karmAs , he served all kinds of masters and

doted on various relationships with utmost intensity

that did not lead to the fruit of firm attachment to

the Lord's lotus feet. In a state of naicchiyam

(revulsion about his wasted days in sva vritthi as a

result of not devoting his time and energy on the

Sarva Gandhan and Sarva Bhandhu ). He had equated his

status to that of a lowly dog (nAyEn ) in the first

verse that has arrived. He implies like NammAzhwAr who

described himself before the very same Lord of

ThiruvenkaTam (Thiruvaimozhi paasuram: 3.4) as "

NeesanEn, NiraivonrumilEn " .

 

In one of his ThirumAlai paasurams, Tondaradipodi

describes himself and his status this way :

 

" manathilOr Thooymai illai vaayilOr inn sollilai…

ennai ALudaiya koavae… “

 

Oh Lord RanganAthA There is no purity in my thoughts.

There is no pleasing word coming out of my speech in

praise of You. I do not know the ways for upliftment

to attain your grace . I have now arrived at

your sannithi and am standing before You with all my

lowly , ferocious and despicable traits. I am indeed

the AdhamAdhamAn ( Lowliest of the Lowliest). Please

bless me!
