Shashidhar on the violin & Sri Prakash Rao on the mridangam On Saturday August 12 th 2006 @4:30 pm Dr. Bhavani Prakash is a dedicated musician by passion, and is a physician by profession. Bhavani is very talented. Her music is known for creativity, variety, raagabhaavam, steady shruti and flowing swaras in sarvalaghu-baani. Vocal music, flute and veena are long-standing music traditions of India, and Dr. Bhavani Prakash is an exponent in all three. Bhavani gives vocal concerts, veena concerts and flute concerts. She has sung or played veena/flute, and choreographed music for bharatanatyam and kuchipudi dance-concerts for prominent dance-schools in US. She gives music classes, and has students winning prizes in vocal, veena & flute. Bhavani currently takes advanced music lessons from T.M. Krishna, a leading vocalist of today. Initiated into vocal music at the age of four by her mother, Smt. Vasantha Subramaniam, a disciple of Sri Delhi Gopalakrishnan and Sangeeta-aachaarya Sri B. V. Raman, she had some vocal lessons from Rajalakshmi Narasimhamurthy, a disciple of Dr. D.K.Pattammal, and from Sri Palghat T.R. Rajaram(son of the legendary Palghat Mani Iyer). Bhavani had her veena and flute lessons under Sri A. V. Prakash, a disciple of Dr. N. Ramani. She won the All India Radio National Award at the age of seventeen. Her other prominent awards include the First Prize in the National Inter-University Youth Competitions including Hindustani and Carnatic classical music, the Ambujam Krishnan Award from the Music Academy, Madras, the Best Artist Award from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Madras, and the titles Ganabharati and Nalinasudhavarshini. Bhavani is an A-Grade AIR and Doordarshan artist. She has vocal CD albums and instrumental CD albums to her credit. Bhavani continues to give lessons, concerts and lecture-demonstrations in the US and in India, including in the December Music season in Chennai every year. She has also given concerts in Singapore. Dr. N. SHASHIDHAR received training in violin in the Carnatic style from the legendary Padmabhushan Sri Lalgudi G. Jayaraman from 1973. Shashidhar has also received training in vocal Carnatic music and violin Western style. He has given many solo violin recitals as well as accompanied prominent artists such as Sri T. N. Seshagopalan, Dr. M. Balamurali Krishna. He has a Ph. D. in Material Science and works for Corning. Prakash Rao had his initial training in mridangam from Sudarshanaachaarlu, uncle of one of the Hyderabad Brothers. Since 1982, he has been a student of Sangeetakalaanidhi Sri Vellore Ramabhadran, one of the greatest exponents on mridangam and ‘King of the Sarvalaghu-baani’. He has also received some advanved lessons from Sri Umayaalapuram Shivaraman, Kanjira Nagarajan and from Palghat Sri T.R. Rajamani, son of the legendary mridanga vidwan Palghat Sri Mani Iyer. He continues to learn from Sri Vellore Ramabhadran whenever they meet. He has accompanied many famous and talented musicians such as Lalgudi Sri Jayaraman, Chitravina Ravi Kiran, and has played in dance programs by several reknowned dancers. Prakash propogates the sarvalaghu-baani of his guru in his concerts and in mridangam classes at his home. He has several students. He is a management consultant by profession.
