Guest guest
Sat Nam, I recently received my spiritual name via email - Ad Purkh Singh. It means the lion of god who is a pure being, who is part of gods original, primal power, a part of god in his absolute purity. Not entirely sure what this means, but think it maybe means god in His pure, raw form as oppose to one of His many manifestations? I felt a different kind of energy surround me as I read my spiritual name for the first time, not sure if it was maybe psychological but I don't think so. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, is it possible for two people to have the same spiritual name? I googled 'Ad Purkh Singh' and there seems to be someone else with the same name from the netherlands. Guest guest
Aloha Ad.... When I got my spiritual name, I felt affirmation for the deepest part of my being. For me, I often get lost in my purpose here on this crazy and wild planet. So, it lifts me and makes me remember when the darkness descends or when the fear holds me back. It also helps me go forward... When I hear other names I think we all could possess these qualities at one time or another? Guest guest
Dear Ad Purkh Singh: I'll answer the easiest question first: Yes many people may have the same name. In the early days, Yogi Bhajan gave the same name to couples. My first teacher was Subagh Singh and his wife was Subagh Kaur. You will see more than one Awtar (also spelt Avtar) around! Energy of receiving the name: Great! It comes from recognition of your self. For me it was something like I wanted to tell Yogi Bhajan " Wow! You see in me what I expected the world to see but no one seems to! " And the realization that I had much to open up to myself! The meaning of your name: " Ad " means " in the beginning " , and " Purkh " means " God pervading everything " , so that's an interesting combination. Doesn't it look like a contradiction? God created everything, God has no beginnings and no end. There is a sense of God before the creation and after the creation. So try to grasp what the essence of God was before creation (in the beginning) and at the same that God is " its " own creation. When you can get past the apparent contradiction you get to the absolute purity of God. So I don't think of it as God in its raw form and I don't think of it as one of God's manifestations. Meditate on it and I think you will feel the mystery of the universe much more deeply than physicists are able to come to at this time regarding their unification theory. And you are embodying this mystery. Blessings, Awtar Kundaliniyoga , " otto_fender " <j_s_hume wrote: > > Sat Nam, > > I recently received my spiritual name via email - Ad Purkh Singh. Guest guest
Enjoy your spiritual name. It is something to meditate upon and something to take joy in and, when someone calls to you, " Ad Purkh Singh! " you will both be blessed: them for saying or speaking those sacred words and you for acknowledging that they are your soul's identity When I got my spiritual name it was in one sense no surprise. I knew that my name was contained somewhere in the Mul Mantra. I just knew it! When I had decided to become a Sikh, this was the mantra that felt like home. All the others were associated with Kundalini Yoga and while they weren't any less important really, the Mul Mantra seemed to envelope my spirit as I spoke, or sang or chanted it. It removed me from the earthly plane and allowed a long glimpse into the divine cosmic space. It was inspiring and chastening at the same time. I had a lot of work to do if I was to remember that God is really the doer of ALL things. And I was merely God's manifestation in this time and space! Wow! Or Wahe Guru! Coincidentally, a good friend applied for his spiritual name at the same time. As we both nervously awaited the answer to our spiritual destiny he worried that he might " only " get a simple one word spiritual name like, Sat, or Karta or Sant, something like that. " I want a really great name, " he said. His prayers were answered when Yogiji blessed him with Siri Nam, the Great Pure Name of God!!! Remember your Name and you will never forget God. Guest guest
So what if you don't like your spiritual name, or you can't for some reason connect to it? What does that mean? Can you change the name? Kundaliniyoga , KartaPurkh Khalsa <kpsk_teacher wrote: > > Enjoy your spiritual name. Guest guest
Words like " don't like " or " can't connect " are signs I think of resistance to our destiny. We may indeed have to go through a lot of garbage to reach our destiny, our highest calling, whatever that may be, but we will go through it, in this life or the next or the one after that, but make no mistake we will go through it. Our resistance to something, a spiritual name, a yoga exercise that is difficult, or a meditation that is uncomfortable are all symptoms of our ego resisting our spirituality. Our soul or divine nature wants to come to the fore and guide our entire existence. Our ego, our physicality and mental make up resists. Adopting and using (most important) a spiritual name is an exercise in flexing and building our divine nature so it can take over and lead us to our destiny. It is a meditation that sometimes may be difficult. Keep up and you will be kept up! What does that mean? Can you change the name? > Yogi Bhajan said, " What is a spiritual name? Your spiritual name is your designated destiny, your heavenly identity. That's all it is. You may or may not live to ot, but it is your guiding force. And it's a prayer. When somebody calls me " Yogij, " it means " One who is united with the greater soul. When somebody calls me " Bhajan " it means " A Divine Song. " And if somebody calls me " Harbhajan Singh, " it means " The Lion who sings the Divine Song. " It's a prayer in the other man's word. It's a calling. What is a prayer? It's a calling. That's it. And you answer the calling. You get uplifted. It's a plus. It's a way to get other people's blessings. That's all. No big deal. " <end of quote> " No big deal. " Not all KY practitioners and not all KY teachers take a spiritual name. There's no requirement to do so to become a KY teacher for instance. We all have many names. Yogi Bhajan seemed to enjoy his different names. You may feel that there are times when one name speaks to you more than another. I suggest you work boldly with your intuition, mindful (heartful?) of ego. If you are uncomfotable with your spiritual name it may be useful to consider the discomfort and the root of your discomfort with compassion and then let it go. A good name is one that somebody can use to call you and you recognise as being you. If you choose not to use the spiritual name you have been given, you could meditate on the fact that you are not using it and again touch your intuition. This is not about feeling guilty, it's a route to exploring aspects of your identity by holding a mirror up to yourself. Some folks feel that it's important to use your spiritual name all the time. I'm not sure about that. It seems to me (and this is a personal view) that whether your 'spiritual name' is used by everyone you know all the time or is a name that you only use in mediatation, it has value. There are many ways to keep up, treat yourself with the compassion you would show to others. Sometimes I think that all names are spiritual, but I may be wrong. Names appear to be linked with identity, but really our identity is more closely linked with how we perceive things, including the names people call us for whatever reason. The name is as Yogiji says in the quote " It's a calling " ... a name is not 'you', it's a device for people to call 'you', it's 'you' that answers the calling in whatever way manifests divine truth. Each new name gives us a way of viewing ourselves from a different perspective, be it a song or the singer. Guest guest
Dear Awtar, leslie + KartaPurkh, I meditated on my spiritual name for the first time last night and it was very enjoyable, it certainly made for a deep meditation! During the meditation my name felt like a bit of a chicken and egg, what came first scenario, I guess it might take me a little while to get to grips with the 'God as its own creation' idea but I am looking forward to delving deeper into it. I see some similarities between my spiritual name and a Zen Koan in the sense that it is a conundrum that allows you to channel your energy on a single point of enquiry. I have also read somewhere that true meditation is when you contemplate the Divine, which, meditating on my spiritual name is doing, i guess. I am also consistently trying to connect with the energy of name during my daily life and think it will be a useful tool to call upon. About the pronunciation of my name; am I right in thinking its `ad' (as in 1 + 1) purkh (pronounced poork) singh (as in sing a note)? Guest guest
I am wondering. I have seen lots of spiritual names and they are all sanskrit. Why is this? Blessings Stephen O. Guest guest
Dear Stephen: It depends which tradition you are talking about. I have friends with Native American spiritual names, Hawaiian names... the names are always in the tradition of the spiritual teacher as far as I know. Although I also know people with spiritual names they receive intuitively, and that's not in any language we know on Earth! In our Kundalini Yoga community we don't use Sanskrit, we use Punjabi which has a close relation to Sanskrit. But your question might be rephrased as: Why is Sanskrit or Punjabi so special? They are languages that vibrates our nervous system, so you don't need to understand them to use them to connect with the truth, the infinite, the ecstatic experience of wisdom, etc... Why is > this? Sat Nam! I know that for the mantra (and I suppose it is the same for the spiritual name) we use sankrit/gurumuk because they allow us to arrive close to the original vibration of any things, since it makes possible to obtain 22850 phonemes (in comparison of the other modern laguages the sanskrit has 52 letters - italian alphabet 21, english 25). If i wrote something wrong (excpet my english!) i hope someone else will correct my answer :-) Fateh Dharma!
