Guest guest
My husband, a healthy 45 year old who does gentle KY with me, has started having nearly intolerable hip pain--right side. We are doing massage and gentle stretching. Finally, he goes to the doctor. Diagnosis? Either bursitis, tendonitis, or sciatia. That really helped.... X-rays normal except for some inflammation. He is in pain, and the anti-inflammatories barely work. He is still working, etc. but it is really affecting him. Since we both know emotional/spiritual issues cannot be separated from the physical, we have looked into chakra issues. I am at a loss. Help? Guest guest
Guru Gian, Sat Nam, where is your husband's pain, where in the hip does he feel it and is it better or worse with any particular movement? I have experienced pain of different types in each of my hips. In my right hip, male energy, I feel the physical manifestation as extremely tight psoas muscle and have had much relief working with a somatic body worker using some Feldenkreis type techniques. I am also aware of and am releasing the emotional issues surrounding both hips. I will be interested in reading the other responses. Guest guest
His pain is in the outside edge of his hip, but it radiates through his hip and even at times down his leg. He has trouble bending and getting up and down out of a chair. Thanks for sharing your experiences! Gian
Guest guest
I would be interested in this as well! I have just started having hip pain a couple of days ago. The pain is on the left side, the top of the hip and radiating down the back side. Sitting is fine, as long as my feet are flat on the floor. Standing is fine. Pain when moving and bending forward. Guest guest
Sat Nam, Gian, I know you asked specifically about emotional/spiritual issues related to your husband's hip pain, but I would also like to say this for your consideration: Several years ago I developed severe pain in my right hip, radiating at times down my entire leg, sometimes also concentrating at the knee. I went through a period of not being able to bend my right knee at all while sitting for meditation, because that would jam the hip, which was positioned incorrectly, up into an unbearably painful place. I stopped walking back and forth to work and for my own enjoyment for many months, because it was just not do-able. I saw an excellent chiropractor, who told me that my right hip was rotated forward and upward in relation to my left hip and torso, and that this pelvic imbalance was causing other muscles in the leg to strain to try to compensate for the lack of support. He was able to tell this just from looking at the way I was standing, but he also did a hands-on to confirm it and then x-rays to make sure there was no compromise of the spine. Chiropractic adjustments relieved some pain and increased my range of motion, confirming to me that I was on the right track, but I had to do some work on my own to make lasting changes in my body. Gentle stretching and warming up is good. To that I would add a set that strengthens the abdominal muscles and aligns the pelvis. I used Gururattan Kaur's " Complete Warmup and Preparation for Meditation " in her manual " Transitions to a Heart-Centered World " . I still do that set regularly, before I do any other kriya. The life nerve stretch, alternate leg stretches, and single and double leg raises eventually eased my hip back into proper position. Doing them daily reinforced correct alignment. I did them very slowly with long deep breathing, sometimes each exercise for several minutes until I felt the muscles loosen and lengthen. During alternate leg stretches I often could feel (and hear!) my hip going back into position, after 7 or 8 minutes. Stretch pose and crunches strengthen the abdominal muscles. If the abs are weak, the pelvis can chronically tilt too far forward or too far back, and muscles in the hip strain to provide support because the hip (bone) is not grounded and is no longer doing so. It was uncomfortable, at times painful, to do this set at first, but because I was clear that it was a pain generated in the correction of a problem, and because I was sure I wasn't doing any more damage in this process, I stuck with it. Underlying issues: hip = foundation; right side = masculine energy. Feeling unsupported by the men in my life? Living too much in my own masculine energy & throwing my self out of balance? Needing to give that assertive side of me a rest & pay more attention to the re-generative, re-producing aspects of myself? All food for thought. Guest guest
Sat Nam Several years ago I experience a similar situtaion. I had actually wrenched my back, but at the same time rotated my right hip in towards the left. I could hardly get up the stairs. I ended up going to physical therapy to rotate the hip out. That's actually the reason I discovered yoga after I was done with physical therapy. Perhaps a simliar, seeming unrealted injury could be the cause of your husband's hip pain, Gian. Thank you for sharing the information about Gururattan Kaur's " Complete Warmup and Preparation for Meditation, Nirvair Kaur. I will have to look into that. Guest guest
Sat Nam, In 1976 I found myself under the tires of a Toyota Landcruiser (fortunately on the cushionion sand of a beach) which I believe to be the physical cause of my hip, back, knee and neck weaknesses and misalignment. It took some years for the subsequent injuries of my body to make themselves known and many more years before I began practicing kundalini yoga. Chiropractic has eased some of the symptoms, but I am finding more and more relief and correction with continued practice and continued searching into the psychological/emotional/spiritual issues and how they manifest in my physical body. I don't want to tout one form of physical healing over another, any and all can be wonderfully effective but will offer that my experience with recent somatic body work has brought the connection between my body and the rest of my being and the simultaneous healing of both. Find the kriyas and mediations that speak to you and stick with them for a while. Accept your experience and love yourself. Guest guest
Sat Nam Gian Kaur, Try Castor Oil Compresses http://www.lifeevents.org/castor-oil-compress.htm http://curezone.com/cures/castoroil.html It's pretty impressive how it has benefited my knee problem in just a few days. Pay attention to the emotions that may come to surface as the toxicity is moved.
