Greetings all,

I've been practicing yoga for a little over a year now - but was

introduced to it several years ago. I first learned of Kundalini

yoga (the serpent power), however, I was not privy to the knowledge

of a kundalini practice - this was about 8 years ago. Now that I've

been introduced to yoga (asana, pranayama & meditation practices) - I

long for it more and more. I went through a teacher's training

program and shortly thereafter the studio started a kundalini class -

amazing!! I started practicing Kundalini yoga and have had many

wonderful experiences - even completed a 40 day meditation given to

me by my instructor - this was awesome - but she has recently left

and now I'm at a point in my life where I know I need more

meditation - however my living circumstances is providing great

difficulty - my family does not understand my journey therefore they

have no respect for my longing for silence. As I went through my 40

day meditation I was greeted with many distractions - from walking in

on my meditation to obnoxious loud talking - I've tried to put up

signs of no disturbance to no avail - My financial situation is

limited creating great difficulty to move out - my only refuge is the

class I teach - I go early to have a few minutes of meditation before

I begin - but I long for it more and more - Please - if there is any

wisdom out there that can shed some light on my situation - make it

known unto me - with Great Thanks

Dear Derek,

Sat Nam!

I totally understand your need for silence. Or even a bit of respect and quiet.

But that is not the case at the moment. So what to do?

About a year ago construction began right in front of my house. This noise did

not make me very happy, but like your situation, there was no way to stop it.

So instead of being annoyed, I told myself that I had to train myself to listen

to the sound of silence inside my head. Of course, this is fairly easy when

there are no distractions. But lessons are not always easy. So I keep

listening inside my head, until the inner sound was able to get my attention

more than the outer noises.

It is amazing perhaps, but the silence is always available in your mind. It

can always be your refuge. You can feel safe inside in your sacred space no

matter the distractions. You cultivate a powerful radiance from this. People

will wonder what you are doing and you just go about your business. One day

they may even admire this energy and want you to practice, so they can feel the

Light that you are emitting.

Make this into your own personal game. Tell no one, but yourself.

Chanting mantras will draw you inward faster than just listening. And the

mantras have the power to shift the negative thoughts too.

So take on the challenge to listen so intensely within to the cosmic sounds that

this higher frequency envelopes your being. Of course, this will take time, but

you want to cultivate this power anyway. This is your chance.

Blessings,

Guru Rattana

Hi Derek,

Traditionally the best hours for meditation are from 4:00 to 7:00am as the

rays of the sun are at an angle to the earth that makes meditating far more

profound. Does your family get up that early? That may well prove to be the

quiet time that you are seeking.
