Guest guest
Yogi Bhajan (before he passed away) told me that " Dev " was the Embodiment of " Devi-a " .. humbly dev saroop Deva " Deva " comes from the sanskrit root " div " meaning " to shine " . Deva is masculine, Devi is feminine. The literal meaning for Deva/Devi could be " He/She who emanates light " . They are sanskrit words for " deity, god, demi-god, celestial being, spirit " and had an influence on the latin words Deus, Divus, the english Divine, Deity, the french Dieu, the italian Dio, and so on. The form " Dev " has the same meaning, with the elision of the last vowel. I suppose it could be from Gurmukhi or some dialectal form, but I am not sure; for instance in Hindi sometime they don't pronounce also the last vowel of the words.
