Guest guest
We have had many discussions concerning how to deal with difficulties with relationships, with loss of jobs and others that visit us... I dedicate this poem to you. Do you Remember? Do you remember? When we took two hours together where we had one? When we wanted an extra hour out of every day? an extra dollar every hour? a little more gravy? a little more sweets? a little more time? a little more space? a longer vacation? a better car? a bigger yard? more fun and less hardship? Do you remember? We still craved for more nothing truly satisfying… Do you remember? That was how greedy we were… Because we did not understand We did not know where the true craving came from until we noticed all this meant nothing… Do you remember? The most difficult to give up was each other… Oh! How I longed for your touch! How I longed for your eyes looking into mine seeking into me to quench your craving! How I longed to look into you to quench my craving! Do you remember? And it could only be found in our own hearts… Do you remember? We gave each other back to God? Willingly! Willingly we gave our hunger and our thirst! Willingly we gave up money and pleasure! Willingly we gave our children! Willingly we gave our home and our life! Willingly we gave back time and space! What was there more to give? Do you remember? Do you remember the look of people? The banks that repossessed our house and our car? Our friends, our neighbors? Our own fears and shame thinking we'd done something wrong? Do you remember? Then we saw something we had not noticed before It had always been there We could not see it We were looking elsewhere And tears started rolling down our cheeks Do you remember? Tears of disbelief! And everything we'd believed in Everything we'd attached ourselves to was burning burning! -- it surprised us -- inside our flesh the last atom of desire Do you remember? We felt so foolish? And so loved -- for the first time -- And yet we were always loved so -- we simply did not notice before Do you remember? And in the midst of this new feeling I saw you and you saw me And we laughed -- shocked and blessed and shocked -- Because you and I Do you remember that moment? You and I had never been apart! Do you remember? What a joke it was! Do you remember? Thank you for being there with me Rochester, November 25, 2007
