Guest guest
Greetings, I was wondering if anybody would be able to offer me some advice concerning a ringing noise that has been present in my right ear? It has lasted for six weeks so far. As it happens, I have been to a consultant physisian and a hearing therapist to rule out any problems with the physiology of the ear itself. Thankfully, the tests have indicated that my hearing is working at a normal level. Significantly, there does not appear to be any underlying problems with the body which may have caused such a noise, eg. anemia or blood pressure etc. According to the advice I have been given, it seems as if the noise could be a product of a number of factors working together. These could include constant stress provoking a continuous 'fight or flight response,' underlying anxiety or a tendency to be more inclined to worry. Also certain states of mind or life events can also apparently trigger such a condition. By example, recent distress or becoming fearful of a given situation. It seems as if the hearing mechanism can become more sensitised in given situations to particular noises. This is apparently where there is an emotional significance to the stimulus itself. Eg. certain sounds or sights may provoke a negative emotional response such as fear or anger. If a sound is considered a threat according to our conditioning, we may have the tendancy to listen to it more and more to monitor its location, intensity, character etc. Therefore, it seems that in certain circumstances, the hearing can become too sensitised to background sounds and consequently even inner-body noises. I would certainly agree with the reasons stated in the previous paragraph as to why this condition may have come about. Specifically, the tendency to worry about my health and the fact that I have had a high-stress lifestyle in the last 6-7 months. In other words this ringing sound would seem to be a psychological issue where I may have become too sensitised to background/ inner-body noises. In fact, the tinnitus retraining programme I have been referred to has suggested that the sound itself is generated by listening to the operation of inner-ear nerve cells! Not an enviable ability! I should add that a significant part of the problem has been my emotional reaction to the noise itself. Instead of initially ignoring it as a temporary condition, I have paid it too much attention with the consequence that it has become more prominent. The difficulty I am now facing is that I have dug myself into a deeper hole by becoming too aware of this noise. The reason I am writing to this forum is given that my attitude and emotional state of mind in relation to the noise will determine how long this condition lasts for before the noise ceases to be percieved. The tinnitus retraining programme that I am following has the aim of ending the perception of the noise. The below are the steps that have to be followed to achieve the goal of the retraining: 1. Try to gradually adjust the negative emotional reaction to the ringing sound. This is so that the sufferer adopts a neutral view on the sound. If this becomes the case, the noise then becomes part of the many background noises that we do not pay any attention to. By example, think of a ticking clock: we generally hold a neutral emotional reaction to such a sound and do not focus on it when we hear it. When a sound does not provoke either a negative or positive response, we are much less likely to pay it attention. 2. Adjust lifestyle in order to relax. This is crucial to deal with the anxiety state created by the condition. Of course, this is linked with the point made in #1. This is owing to the fact that it is not possible to adopt a positive state of mind in order to ignore the noise, if the anxiety state is not first dealt with. In addition, there are other significant points to be mentioned. Namely that I should not block out the sound with loud music etc. This is owing to the fact that it is impossible to become used to a sound that you cannot hear! If anybody could offer any advice, this would be much appreciated. In summary, my aims are to: 1. Develop a neutral view of the sound by trying to ignore it and not pay it any attention. 2. Relax to calm the anxiety state that has been created by the condition. 3. Try to focus my attention away to other matters in my daily routine. This is so the primary focus of what I am doing is shifted away from the noise itself. Thanks Sam Kershaw Manchester, UK
Guest guest
Sat nam. Do you think that there is something that you haven't been hearing in the bigger picture? E.g. you need slow down, you need to take time out, that sort of thing. Perhaps you could ask your higher self to give you the illumination that you require to understand why this is happening to you, and then be open to receiving the answer. God has ways of getting our attention when we are not taking care of ourselves on all levels. Or, alternatively, have you tried sending this part of your body the energy of love, forgiveness and compassion? There is a difference between listening to the sound and understanding why it is happening to you, and I say this meaning that its not just about anatomy and physiology. Perhaps something like pranic healing which would clear at an energetic level would be of help.
Guest guest
I practice only " alternative " medicine, but having tinnitus myself, have heard its from a calcium deposit buildup. Have tried most supplements I know to no avail. Its worth at least checking out from your local " knowledgeable " health food store. Hope you get this, as I don't have a password to get through onto to help you out. - Marie Hansen Kundaliniyoga Saturday, January 05, 2008 3:56 PM RE: Kundalini Yoga Problem with persistent tinnitus (ringing sound) in right ear Sat nam.
