Hi Crystal, Why be motivated? What do want to get from yoga? It takes a lot of time and much discomfort to get changes from yoga. Kundlaini yoga seems to get the changes fastest but that requires more discomfort! If your life is good and you are happy for at least some of the time maybe you dont need yoga? Maybe you want an ego trip of being on a higher spiritual plane than most other people? That's not the bext motivation I think but if you can use it to spur you on do why not do so. Do you want to be trim and fit? That's another second grade motivation you can use. My motivation was that I was depressed from a difficult life situation and so highly stressed I was getting physical health problems. I was suffering and not expecting to ever be happy or even feel OK again. I tried many de-stressing things before I found Kundalini Yoga so I realised very quickly this was the best or close to it. As I was desperate I was prepared to put up with all discomforts and sped over an hour a day doing it. But I was slow to catch on the importance of doing kriyas for 40+ days with no breaks. I was motivated but not that disciplined. But I stuck at it and after a few years was no longer depressed and not suffering physically. I had achieved my aims. If I did intensive yoga I would feel really good - but the lovely feelings would slip away. So I keep going so I can feel good for more of the time. Basically this yoga is the key to my happiness - it removes the negatives that prevent my natural happiness coming out. I never expect to reach the later stages of this path - all the wonderful experiences and changes that you hear so much about in this field. I guess I am just a householder living a relatively normal life. I dont believe in god and I dont connect with any universal conciousness. I love singing mantra's but I don't intend to become a sikh. I do it for selfish reasons - but as I become happier and less full of woe I notice I treat people better and have more time for them and this makes both sides of my relationsips simpler and healthier. So there I have a motivation for you that is maybe different from most people in the Kundalini yoga world. I do it for myself not for immediate benefit but because I know all effort made is repaid later. It makes you relaxed and empties your mind of neurosis and hang-ups. It rips apart the mal-adjusted partly negative 'sense of self' that we build up over a life time of stress and trauma. Then what is left is a simpler self - more relaxed, able to react to slights and hurts and bad luck with quiet acceptance and forgiveness not anger. For me the improvement in quaity of life is immense. It took being in a very low place for me to get started at this stuff. But once I discovered what it does I would be a fool to stop. So how to get motivated? Well do you want to work hard to change? You can't understand how you will change - only that pretty well everyone that has put in the effort will tell you it was well worth it. It is an experiment on yourself. If you have expectations you can be disappointed. But if you say 'Ok I will work hard to see what happens' then you will be surprised. Some of the surprises are unpleasant - One part of your 'self' resists changes and tries to tell you not to bother or tries to stop you using all sorts of cunning tricks. That experience is shared by us all and it makes the community loving and supporting. Overall the changes are absolutely wonderful and well worth it. This you will discover if you do daily practise. I stoke my ego by telling myself that most people just cant or wont do this. I am one of the blessed lucky few. I deflate my ego a bit by telling myself it took desperation to get me here not my wisdom! Do it and see! Keith. PS If you dont that's fine. Most people don't. Not doing it but but keeping on telling yourself you should - now that's the odd choice. That part of the subconcious that makes us feel conflicted like that is the part the yoga will blow away (eventually if you work hard!). PPS I think one thing a lot of people rediscover in yoga is just how tough they are and how hard they will work if they need to. Modern life makes us fall into a lazy comfort zone where we lose touch with our toughness and resilience. K yoga will change that.
Guest guest
Hello, Crystal, A month or so ago, some of us from this list formed a small group to do a 40-day practice together. [online] It certainly helped me to stay with the practice. I had also found it very hard to stay motivated, but it is helpful to have others involved. If you are interested in joining us, please mail me off-list. Guest guest
Sat Nam, Crystal, I have two ideas which involve changing your approach. Pick sets, exercises, breathing or meditation that you like to do. If you like spinal flex, do spinal flex. Whatever it is, do what you enjoy doing. The second idea is why not just do it? Decide to do maybe 5-15 minutes a day in the morning before breakfast. Don't wait til later so you have time to talk yourself out of it. Then you are thinking about it all day. Not a good idea. Don't think about being motivated, just make a commitment to do a small amount in the am everyday. And voila, things can change. Many blessings, Guru Rattana :+)
