Guest guest
Can any one shed some light as to why many of the exercises in Kundalini yoga (ie. leg stretches) start on the left side first? Thanks.

This is a good question a probably related to why we inhale when twisting left & exhale twisting right and why we sit in versana with the right knee raised & not the other way round. I have much more tension and knots round my lower spine and upper front leg on the left side and think this may be the case for everyone although some people I have asked say they have more tension on the right side. Exhaling as we release a stretch to our left side and not the other way round means we are working on those left sided muscles more to release. Trouble is I can't think why starting leg stretched on the left side gives that side priority! There's probably other deeper reasons too but I don't know them. Keith. Guest guest
The left side is our receptive side, so naturally the energy is created there. The right side is projective and the energy dispensed. I don't know that it's a hard and fast rule that we start on the left side but it has seemed natural to me. Guest guest
Dear Liz, Our left side is our receptive, feminine side. Our right side is our action male side. Both men and women have a left side and a right side. Guest guest
It is the same way with Thai massage : you start the foot massage on the left foot. I believe this has to do with the circulation of blood and of lymph. The body is lateralized. Both sides are not the same. You have one more lobe in your right lung than in your left. The gut is very different from one side to the other, the appendix is on one side only etc. This last fact explains why people with colon problems often have right hip/knee problems for example. Also some mineral deficiences are lateralized too. This is a very interesting topic and I believe that knowing more about this can help deepen our practice. Sat Nam! Guest guest
I believe the breathing and actions are related to the nervous system. The left is the sympathetic nervous system and the right is the parasympathetic nervous system. The reason in Hatha yoga for rolling to the Right is so that when we arise after rest pose we rise on the parasympathetic side so as to transition gently into a human doing from a human being. If we were to roll to the left our mind, body and nervous system would immediately be prepared for some danger or quick needed response. The same is with the breathing. I believe we do the breathing from left to right and the motions to sooth the nervous system and help it to find balance.
