When I first went to a chiropractor he asked me if I had painful

menstruation. I had minor cramping but nothing I thought was 'unusual'.

He then told me there are muscles that run under the pelvic bones on each

side of my abdomen and they can develop spasms (or trigger points) in them

which can press on a nerve that runs along side the muscle. This can cause

pain or other problems in that region of the body.

To find and release any spasms I lie on my back, knees bent. I then take my

thumb and dig it under the pelvic bone searching for any painful areas or

lumps(spasms). Believe me when you find one you will know! I find it

easiest to start at the 'bottom' of the bone and work up it. When I find a

sore spasm I press on it until it releases or as long as I can tolerate the

pain. I started doing this first thing in the morning and last thing at

night. Eventually, I was able to rid those muscles of all spasms. Now I

just try to remember to check these muscles the week prior to my

menstruation to make sure there aren't any spasms hiding. My minor cramps

are now one short cramp lasting less than five minutes that seems to signify

the start of my menstruation. I do notice however if I am sedentary and do

not walk in the week prior to my menstruation I will have cramping despite

having no spasms evident in these muscles. I also take birth control pills

and I find I have a leeway of one hour to take them at the same time

everyday. If I forget and I take the pill later I find this sometimes will

effect the intensity of the cramp.

Hope this helps, Brenda.

Menstrual Cramps

Treat menstrual cramps, caused by air tattva, with cinnamon bark.

Many women have found it to be a striking remedy, often giving relief on

the first try, after years of monthly pain.

Cinnamon is a warming herb, which warms the middle and disperses

cold. This quality makes it a very good choice to promote menstruation.

Since cinnamon enhances circulation to the uterus, the warm relaxing

blood can relieve the cramps. As you would imagine, cinnamon is often

used together with other female herbs for this symptom.

Two weeks before the period, take one gram of cinnamon in a

capsule. Increase by one gram per day until the period. If no cramps

develop, that’s your dose. If cramps were there, increase the dose

slightly next time. Most women get good results with about 10 grams per

day, starting about 2 days before the period, and continuing through the

cramp days.

Since cinnamon is common as a culinary herb, it is necessary to be

a selective shopper to get good quality. You will find medicinal

quality cinnamon in your health food store or herb pharmacy.

Cinnamon is very safe, but should be used only with caution during

pregnancy.
