My Yoga Journal March 20, 2007 — Issue 249 Your weekly dose of yoga tips, information, and advice. Finding Forgotten Rhythms In my childhood, I was fascinated with percussion instruments. When it came time to choose an instrument to study at school, I was eager to get my hot little hands on a pair of drumsticks. "Not so fast," my parents said. They had other plans: a more "feminine" instrument, like the flute. No amount of begging would persuade them that I was born to play the drums. In nine years of band practice that followed, I could never take my eyes off of that section across the room, which seemed so soulful and important. But while I'd like to believe I was criminally deprived, I actually went on to become successful as a flute major in college. Still, the nagging remained. I noticed it while at a Krishna Das concert several years ago: I couldn't move my focus from the tabla (drum) player. Determined to test my obsession at last, I recently enrolled in a tabla class at the Ali Akbar College of Music. It felt right from the first moment my fingers touched the drums. "There seems to be something magical about the practice of yoga that nurtures in us the courage to head boldly in the direction of our dreams, to extend fully into our lives instead of settling into a shriveled-up version of ourselves," says YJ writer Claudia Cummins.
